In Phoenix, summer is something to be endured rather than enjoyed. The temperatures are regularly above 100 degrees, sometimes 110. The summer rains start now. These are called the ‘monsoons’. They are a disappointment; they are not like Midwest thunderstorms. They seem to appear suddenly and release torrents of rain, and then dissipate. Often there is blue sky near by while above the flood comes down.
Many Phoenix folks get out of town on the weekend - or whenever possible - during the summer. The neighbors across the street won’t return until October. Someone and I hope to get out of town at least four times prior to Labor Day.
Meanwhile, one lives indoors, with AC. It feels like January on its head, although there is no seasonal affective disorder, only cabin fever.
All the tomatoes I put into the ground have died – again. :-{ It is time to face facts that I live in an area too hostile to grow vegetables. I could invest a lot of money into putting in raised beds with irrigation systems and shades, but I choose not to do so. That sounds like too much for what is supposed to be a fun leisure hobby. I am limited to plants in pots, which doesn’t as enjoyable.
The pool, which is unheated, is getting full daily sun, and is warmed up enough to be hardly refreshing. Best time to take a dip -night time, when the air and the pool cool down some too (and the night serves as cover for skinny-dipping!) During summer time dips, the summer triangle is above us. Due to lack of humidity, when you get out of the pool the dry breeze makes a chill.
Summer time is when my interest in cooking increases. I want to make soup. I try to make one new soup per month. Someone is not too fond of soup, so I don’t make too much at a time. This month I am going to try a garlic consommé, which you can serve cold as well as hot.
Such is summer.
