This weekend Someone and I fly ‘home’ to Western Michigan, land of the Dutch.
We are attending my mother’s side family reunion. This year they celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the house, where the anniversary is held every year. I did not want to miss the “100”.
We will spend a night at a friend’s house in Saugatuck prior to driving to Newago County for the reunion.
My grandfather was one of four children of great grandfather Orville W. Orville comes from a long line that goes back to the Mayflower. The four children of Orville – and their descendants - meet every year. This year, for fun, the descendants of each of the four branches will wear a different coloured T-shirt. My line, from Charles W, will wear red. Charles is my middle name.
Most of my childhood memories are about my mother’s side, and her parents.
Growing up, I was vaguely aware of the conservative bend of Western Michigan. I don’t know when this occurred in history, but the conservative Dutch were ejected or perhaps fled The Netherlands to go live in Western Michigan. Besides being conservative in nature and politics , they seem to be often in the garbage business.
My maternal grandmother comes from Dutch stock – the Timmermans. Apparently more ‘liberal’, they found most Western Dutchmen stuffy and hypocritical. They used to make minor jokes about ‘those Dutchmen’.
My maternal grandparents had a Dutch exchange student live with them. I have Ono’s watercolour which he gave to them.
My mother has her greatgrandfather’s bedroom set, which he made himself. If there is anything I want from my parents’ house, it is this.
So this may be my last post until Sunday - be well Spo-fans!

Oh you and Someone have a wonderful, pleasant time at the reunion. Nice to hear that you mom’s side of the family has so much history. Sounds like this ‘100′ will be a HUGE festivity! Hope you’ll be bringing your handy camera!
Drive safely and read you soon, Dr. Urspo.

Just in time for beautiful weather, Dr. Urspo. You and Someone should have wonderful temperatures in the low 80s, and I’m sure some beautiful scenery in Saugatuck. Enjoy!

Have a wonderful time, take pictures and tell us all about it when you return.
Hugs,
Laurie
Urspo - my camera uses (gasp) film, so it may take some time to get the photos back. perhaps someone can be persuaded to bring the digital.

Family reunions are fun and scary at the same time. I enjoy seeing my dad’s brothers and their wives and scaring the conservative Christians in the group by being luvy-duvy with my man in front of them. Oh, and then following them into the next room when they get up and leave.
Your color should have been lavender or pink. Just sayin’.
Urspo- and shoes and purse to match!

Have a great time. I chuckled that you do not need to put your Dutch in quotation marks as we do around here. LOL!
I got a kick out of the colored t-shirt idea, too. Pretty cool!

I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to go home to a place that has a century’s worth of history to envelop and nurture you. Have a wonderful trip and try not to think of me sitting here, sweating my balls off in a town without pity.
Urspo - you are just the Christian martyr!

It’s interesting and some times strange reading different things about people. For example you living and growing up in Michigan. I was born there in Grand Rapids and still have a few relatives living there. I suppose many people would say that’s not strange nor interesting. See the strange part for me is meeting some one on line that I don’t know and finding out things we have in common. I guess I don’t know what I’m saying. It would take to long to explain. So instead I’ll say… “Enjoy your trip!” and leave it at that

I hope you have your clogs (klompen) packed, you never know if an occasion might arise when you might need them.
You did say the house is 100 years old!!
Enjoy yourself with your family Spo, there’s nothing quite like a family reunion to feel free and let yourself go!!
BTW
Wearing clogs is considered to be healthy for the feet. Tell that little tidbit to your Orthopedist.

Travel safely and we’ll look forward to the details when you get back.
What wonderful family history. I know very little about the history of my family as they are not talked about often and when they are talked about it’s not nicely

Hey Darlin’, my grandpa Van Blarcom was of Dutch stock. But he was a Quaker man in Pensylvania (an’ a policeman not a garbageman)
Huggs, etc…
Urspo-it is always nice to have you drop by!

Hey! You picked a wonderful time to be in W. Mich! You may actually want to bring a sweatshirt, coming from 110 degrees, 70 may feel a little chilly.

Have a great time. I’ll echo Ben’s comment. It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend, clear, cool, and dry. The predicted low temps will be in the 50s. Safe travels. I’m looking forward to seeing you guys next weekend. I just got confirmation from the B&B, I’ll email you guys the particuylars over the weekend or on Monday.

It’s fun to have such color in ones family history. It gives a context to our craziness.
Urspo-The Reds are decended from my grandfather. The Yellows are from grandfather’s twin sister. The few greens are the uncle; the blues are another aunt. the Whites are descended from my great grandfather’s sister- they always come to these reunions!

Isn’t it cool to think of things in this kind of wild, weird perspective. I love doing that! I’m just right behind you…..19,400 and counting! It’s fun and cool, eh?
