When I am feeling despondent, I take the Julie Andrews approach, and think about my favorite things. (There is no singing involved)
Here are the 8 things I do when “down in the dumps”.
1) I will leave this one blank. My family reads my blog.
2) Watch a Marx Brothers movie. I learned this fantastic intervention from one of my analysis professors. He thought whenever a person was taking things or their lives too seriously, watching the Marx Brothers was a good tonic to put things back into perspective. My favorite is “Duck Soup”.
3) Make and eat a lot of macaroni and cheese. This hot and wholesome dish is the best comfort food I know. I use plenty of pepper.
4) Reread a favorite book (or a favorite passage of one).“The Phantom Tollbooth” is good for depressed moods. So are the recipe books by Ruby Ann Boxcar. The updates on her neighbors always produce a smile and a cheer-up. My favorites are the updates of trailer park neighbor Opal and her (now ex) spouse Dick Inman.
5) Put on a “Firesign Theatre” CD. “The Adventures of Nick Danger” series is fantastic. If you can get a hold on “Everything you know is wrong” – well, this one is a guarantee for cheering-up.
6) Call the Best Friend. Just hearing his voice gets me to smile and giggle, knowing what is coming.
7) Read the Forgiveness Prayer. I posted this as my 4/2/07 entry. If you haven’t read it yet, do so; it never fails to make me laugh.
Make some Tea.The ritual of preparing a pot of tea puts me into a soft serene state of being. The inhalation of the aroma/the sensation of the hot liquid about to be consumed make me smile every time.
If these 8 interventions should ever fail, then there is always medication: Skittles or Gummi-Bears - taken three times a day on an empty stomach.

There are three people in my life who unfailingly make me laugh every time we talk. I try to remember to call them not jus in the down times, but all the time.
I have also become a believer in the healing properties of music (with or without singing).
And for comfort food: anything with garlic (lots and lots!) or rosemary.

Nick Danger is the best.
We had a cassette of this and wore it out. When I first met my husband and he would put this on I woudl try so hard to pay attention to the whole thing. It never seemd to make any sense. Now I know it’s not supposed to -duh!–!!
We still use quotes from it in our conversations.
Too funny. Thanks for the reminder.

Mmmm…gummi bears. On the mac and cheese, I’ll go one up on Lemuel here. Last week I made it from scratch- using homemade cheese. It was great.

I’m there with you on 3, 4 and 5 and will add listening to Billie Holiday sing Strange Fruit. It cheers me to know I could never be that down.

5 Things to do when feeling cross
Urspo-I tend to do that; think of something I think is brilliant or original only to learn I’ve done it already or (worse) I am recalling somebody else said it and I don’t remember.

Wow, I remember reading the Phantom Tollbooth back in grade school. I may have to revisit that one. I agree about the mac n cheese, and the gummi bears. Probably agree with #1 too
Hope all is well Spo!

I ADORED the Phantom Tollbooth; I think it is a book well worth re reading…and has a VERY cheering effect indeed!

OMG about Marx brother movies!
I remember being told to hunt those down to view by a sympathetic prof who could see how stressed we students were and could get…
Duck Soup is excellent, but “A Day at the Races” is MY fav ..lol

I feel better through catharsis. I watch a sad M*A*S*H episode, or Steel Magnolias, or something else sad. I usually feel better afterward.
