My 2 years of falling down the rabbit hole into Blog–land have given me five ways to find a blog.
1) Through the mentor –
When I started blogging, I knew of one blog – Michael at Temporary Trouble Spots. I started reading blogs from his links. Many of these have stopped blogging, but a few remain. I am quite fond of these ‘founding fathers’ like Andrew at The Other Andrew and Mr. Sorted at Sorted Lives.
2) Reciprocation –
People come a-visiting. Out of courtesy, I started reciprocal reading. Many of these became regular reads. Rodger of Rodger Dodger, Seamus at Scribe of Babylon, and Dietrick at My Philosophy are examples of this category.
3)“Our Mutual Friend” –
I see someone regularly commenting on blogs I read. I see them enough I get curious who they are. I usually like them; it makes sense I would like people reading the blogs I like. Sean at Idle Eyes and a Dormy, and Pink at Pink Pages are examples.
4) “Caught my eye”-
The title of a blog was catching, or their profile picture is handsome. Laurie at Don’t Make Me Get My Flying Monkeys, and Mark at Citywoof are examples of this sort.
5) Fate -
I don’t recall how I found these reads. Perhaps the Fates pulled a few strings and sent them my way. By now this includes most of my links.
There could be a new 6th category – Referrals
Tell me the name of one of your favorite blogs, and a brief reason why you recommend them/like them.
I’ll tell them you sent me…..

Your categories are fascinating… very much like my experience. I’ll have to do a sister-post over at the Scribe so I can put up links for you to check out if you like.
How’s the rope skipping coming along, handsome?

Nice compilation, I find my own blog-o-sphere experience quite similar.

I’d agree with you and those commenting here. Don’t know where I got my list other than as you’ve stated. One which I’ve recently come upon is Writing Cabin: http://writingcabin.blogspot.com/
Good writer, some shared things, eloquent, thoughtful posts.
Of course, one of my very favorites is http://sporeflections.wordpress.com/ both because of the witty writing, careful subject selection, thoughtful insights, and very hot author! Woof.

I agree with Diederick, I have found most of the blogs I read in much the same ways you have. I know I round your site from DougTs links. Here is a site similar to mine in that it offers great posts on biology related things from Florida. Although, FC has a bit more wit than I do in my writing. I notice Doug stops by there as well.

Sticky Crows.blogspot.com is a perennial favorite of mine. He just seems to be a nice guy, with a quirky, understated humor, except when he’s telling potty jokes. He talks about his mate all the time, and his dog Sara, one of the 36 hidden tzaddikim whose prayers uphold the world. and he’s gorgeous and well hung.

I would recommend, “Die Fledermaus”
http://mattvant.blogspot.com/
He writes a good blog, has a love of classical and opera which you can relate to, occasionally writes about me, and he’s mine

Mmm. How about the Whatever blog? John Scalzi’s one of the up-and-coming science fiction authors, not to mention the inventor of the inimitable Bacon Cat. His blog is often updated multiple times a day and, it’s likely to be thoughtful, interesting, or at least a bit weird. With any luck, all three. http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/

One of my absolute favorites is Please Check All That Apply (http://seriouslyflippant.wordpress.com/) He just discovered your blog, and berated us all for having kept you a secret. You may have met him.
Another not-to-be-missed is Too Disgusting to Contemplate, Too Compelling to Ignore (http://dirkmancuso.wordpress.com/)
I second Daniel’s recommendation of Sticky Crows. He is a really fun read. And yes, amazingly gorgeous.
Do you know Birdie? She just started her own blog after many many months of just reading and commenting on others. Her blog is called Strelitzia, at http://strelitziamusings.blogspot.com/
Some of my most favorite bloggers I have found through their comments on other blogs. I read their take on things, find them fascinating, and end up with another blog to enjoy.

Ted Warnell’s blogs aka /t at:
http://pbnmopo.blogspot.com/
Why? Cuz he does weird “new media art”…and he’s Western Canadian
From there you will find a whole bunch of artists that read and comment on his blog - Ruela, Foam, Phosogene Kid, Boneman and more, if you’re into the art stuff
