This weekend I visit New York City. Brother #3 and wife live there while she does a one year-long fellowship. Her rotation ends this summer. I want to see them in a NYC state of mind before they permanently move away (to Seattle of all places).
While his wife work at hospital, Brother #3 volunteers at a local animal shelter, where he helps walk the dogs and brush the cats. Apparently the shelter gets over 3,000 new animals PER MONTH. Can you imagine? It must be heartbreaking work to see all these animals. Most of them are destroyed to make room for the 3,000 coming in.
What I like about this NYC trip is its lack of structure. Other than a supper on Sunday with a friend who lives in town, there are no scheduled events. Brother #3 spends some time scuba diving in aquarium tanks to clean the glass. He has arranged an introduction to his walrus. While in town I hope to see the Cloisters. We may go to the Plaza and visit my girlfriend, Eloise. I don’t have plans at this time to attend the Met or see a show.
I had hopes to meet up with a few blogger buddies. The Fates seem to be fretful as none of them are available that weekend. I know there will be other times.
If there are NYC fans out there, what would you recommend I see or do?

Woah, woah, woah…wait a minute, here….nobody asked me about trotting off to NYC without some sort of supervision.

The walrus sounds fun! Maybe you could see “Naked Boys Singing”? The DVD is fantastic!

Perhaps you could get your new dog from the shelter. That would save one. I have a former student who lives there but I have not heard from him for ages. I’ll bet you would like him.

Jay Cole has a good one, you could call the animal “Kiffin” and collect the 10K from your Dad. A weekend well spend and getting money too.
Anyway, have a great time in NYC, I’m not a person to make jokes about meeting a walrus…

I think my favorite thing to do in New York is just walk. Blocks and blocks and do some good people watching. A trip to the top of the Empire State Building is always fun. Also, if you haven’t been to the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, that is quite impressive. New York is one of my favorite cities.

I was just in NYC on Good Friday. I saw Waiting for Godot with Nathan Lane, John Goodman, Bill Irwin, & John Glover. It was very good. Since you love opera maybe seeing Shequida’s Drag Star Search show at the Barracuda (22nd st and 8 ave – I think. Its behind the Chelsea Hotel). The show is on Thursday nights 11pm-midnight. Shequida sings opera songs.

Have you never been to NYC? I would recommend a visit to the Village (of course). Little Italy (for supper) or Chinatown. If you are into some architecture, you might enjoy a visit to St. John the Divine (Episcopal) and Riverside Church. The UN might be an interesting visit as well. Ellis Island? Ah, the City! So much to do and so little time!

You know, do you really keep your relatives apart by giving them numbers? Or might brother #3 just as well be brother #1 in another post?
You must keep them by order of birth.
I hope you’ll visit the Netherlands once, perhaps give a speech to 4000 psychiatrists?

On Saturday, I am off to see Mary Stuart in the afternoon and Next to Normal in the evening … and then off to The Eagle. Stop by say hello … at any of those three locations. The Jenny Holzer exhibit at the Whitney intrigues, but it will depend on how nice the park is in the morning. The park in the morning on a sunny day is one of my favorite places in NYC. Perfect place to people watch – so many stories just passing by. That’s a favorite pastime – looking at all the hope, happy and life just there for the gaze. Cleansing and reassuring all at once. I’ll keep my eyes posted for your handsome face somewhere in the crowd.

Can naked yoga be purely observatory?
I have been near NY but never in the city proper.

If you’ve never been there are you wanting to do touristy things? Or are you not wanting to do the typical Empire State building, Statue of Liberty, etc, etc? Been there and done both. I’d do the Met or Guggenheim… or the Eagle…

As Mr. Porter wrote: I happen to like New York. I happen to like this town. I like the sight and sound and even the stink of it – the more I know New York, the more I think of it – I happen to like New York.
I’ll be taking a trip to Gotham in two weeks to see my childhood friend and his partner, spend the day together playing catch up and returning to the beach late that evening.
By all means get to the cloisters. Fast Subway trip and worth every minute of it. Such is the peace of the place.
Enjoy.

Have a fantabulous time there, regardless of how structured it may or may not be. 3,000 per month? OUCH!
