In honor of the Opening of Harry Potter #6 ………
Someone likes to go to the movies. He likes ‘going to the movies’ in general . If he had asked as few logical questions when he met me, he would have soon scrammed, as I am not good at going to the cinema.
I get motion sickness at movies. If there is a lot of movement on the screen (action movies and hand held cameras are the worst) I sometimes have to close my eyes and breathe slowly, get up, and go sit in the lobby. Most movie contents don’t interest me. As I deal with human foibles and relationships all day long at work the last thing I want to do is see more of it and pay 10 dollars to boot.
Violent movies make me upset and edgy, as does human cruelty.
So movies without violence, ‘movement’, or people acting badly makes for a limited choice of film.
Someone is broad minded – he’ll go to almost anything ‘to see what it is like’. I want to go to something researched viz. a near guarantee of enjoyment. If I am going to pay 10 bucks I want to be near certain of satisfaction.
I like ‘escape’ movies. This often means fantasy and kiddy movies. It is mildly embarrassing to be an adult without children at the latest Pixar or Walt Disney flick.
Thanks to an ADHD wiring system, I don’t sit still for long periods of time. This happens in movies too. I tend to get up and walk around. I take advantage of the scenes with movement or tensions. I’ve learned not to ask ‘what happened?”
I like to see a movie a few weeks after it opens, so I can sit in a relatively quiet and sparse audience. Someone likes “opening weekend” which usually means standing in lines, crowds, and rowdy loud people.
Poor Someone. He often ends up going to the movies without me.
I am trying to take more chances and say ‘yes’ more, so we can go more often together. As he is a trooper to attend the opera, I should try to brave and go to more movies.

I’m always the creepy (?) adult alone at the children’s movie.
But I love movies in the theater….though I’m with you about the handheld camera work or violence. Who needs that?

I got a taste [again] for movies while I was in Chicago last month, hope to keep it up here in Amsterdam. But… I’ll read about a movie beforehand, don’t wanna waste my €uros by going into town for nothing.

Have fun at the movies!! Did you see Up? I loved it. That chubby kid Russell reminded me of… me.

Harry Potter opened here in Australia today. It’s a Family Tradition that the boys go and see each Harry Potter with me (not their dad.) Can’t wait.
At least there’s no hand-held camera nonsense going on in these movies.

I hate going to the movies. I’ve been to the movies exactly twice in the last six years (Brokeback Mountain and The Return of the King).
Remember that scene in Annie Hall (I think) where Woody Allen pulls Marshall McLuhan out of thin air to tell the opinionated idiot in line that he’s all wrong? That’s why I hate the movies. It’s all about the other people.
I hate the lines, I hate the cost, I hate the smells, I hate the other people in line and in the theater distracting me, I hate watching a movie through someone else’s hair (I know newer theaters have stadium seating that eliminates that last problem, but still).
I prefer to watch movies at home on the wide screen tv. My chair, my terms, my pause button.
*end of rant*
Have a nice day.

Actually, I like sitting in the back of the theatre with no one around me. Unfortunately, I often get kids who are underage and sneaking into “R” rated movie or people who want to chat through the whole thing who decide to sit next to me. I WAS HERE FIRST! Go somewhere else.

I love the movies. My partner does too. He is more particular about what he sees than I am; I am more like Someone in my movie choice. I love documentaries; I go see as many Oscar nominees as I can; and I see all the Pixar films too, I think they are mor for adults anyways.
Philly is having their gay film festival – QFest – this week. I have seen 15 films so far and I have about 18-19 more to go. The Ritz theaters in Philly still have real butter for the popcorn, great candy, and lots of foreign films and documentaries.
Lately I have avoid the violent horror movies, the Saw’s, the Friday the 13ths, etc. I try to remember the gore is just special effects but the ideas behind the gore can be more disturbing to me so I have been avoiding them more. Love the IMAX, the 3-D stuff, etc. And one of my favorite movie memories is when my Mom took me to see Close Encounter of the third Kind in the balcony of the Sam Eric theater in Philly. Pure heaven.

I concurr. Who wants to spend $10 to sit amongst the peasants?!!! Thanks goodness for Netflix!! Except for the rare “must see” film (i.e. LOTR trilogy, etc…) we always wait for them to come out on DVD!

While I love Harry potter films (and even more so the books) I would think they would definately give you motion sickness, especially Quiditch Tournaments! I watch most on DVD or PPV now but do enjoy a big screen for Harry and all the action at Hogwarts. There is one I have only seen on DVD (and fortunately on stage on Broadway) that I would love to see in an original Art Deco Movie palace……Spo I give you one guess….and if you do not get it right I’ll put you on a train to Reno!

I wait till it comes out on video, then rent it. If I really like it, I’ll buy a copy. Otherwise, I don’t enjoy the theatre experience for all the reasons stated above.

I love movies and almost always go alone because I don’t like a commentary during the movie. The only movie that upset me was The Blair Witch Project – the hand held cameras gave me Vertigo and Nausea and I had to leave the theater. I can’t read microfilms either.

At least you don’t ask what happened while you were gone… that would drive me nuts!

We both love going to the movies, but it’s the actual choosing a movie to see, when to see it, etc. that usually bites us in the end. We usually don’t see the movie at all until it comes out on DVD. Sometimes, he wants to see a movie that I don’t and vice-versa so we see those on our own.
And we both like to wait until the movies been around for two weeks just to miss the humongous crowds.

Greg: “…bites us in the end”. No pun intended?

I have reviewed over 2,000 movies on Netflix, and I’ll bet I missed some. I most often go alone, since watching a movie is something of a solitary activity no matter whom you’re with. I will not watch gore or cruelty, so about a third of today’s movies are a no-go. And what is with the new “action” camera work? They don’t leave the camera on its subject more than a split second, and my brain can’t keep up with the visuals. It’s a self-indulgent attempt to cover for a lack of good writing. (See the third Jason Bourne movie, for example. Or better yet, don’t.) They do it on TV now too. *Click*
I like “small” movies. I’m going to see “Moon” this week, the one with Sam Rockwell. He’s an under-appreciated talent.
Best movie ever? “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Hands down, for its genre.

Oh, I’m a total movie junkie. …but, I fear I’m a bit of a movie snob. It takes a lot to drag me into a mega-plex or a mainstream movie.
…I’m the person in the art house cinema watching dark, grim and usually foreign language movies.
Tho, I do want to see HURTLOCKER.
