Tomorrow marks the end of my long time professional e-mail address with Medscape. I’ve have the same business e-mail since the late 90s. Then, it was part of “Physicians on line”. I felt special to have an e-mail end with “pol.net”. POL was eventually absorbed by Medscape, which allowed me to continue the POL address. A few months ago Medscape announced it was pulling the plug on providing email service; we had better pack our bags and folders before the day of Rapture: 1/14/13.
I’ve moved all the saved e-mails; I’ve emailed every one I know with my new e-mail address (at Yahoo.com, which I hope doesn’t go belly up anytime soon).
Like Y2K, I am not sure what happens tomorrow. My pol.net was connected to several websites, as well as my other email addresses. I just hope I haven’t missed anyone/anything lest I can no longer get into Amazon.com for instance, for I’ve ceased to exist without pol.net.
It feels delicious knowing all the spam will find nobody home. I keep my fingers crossed the spam doesn’t follow me to Yahoo.
It will be difficult to keep the social and professional email apart, for Yahoo provides my email comes together in one Inbox. I just know I’m going to muddle something and get some professional group a-wondering who the hell is email@example.com anyway.
It will be nice not having to go to Medscape, but I will miss my dear pol.net address. It is like having to throw out a favorite pair of shoes which have become too worn out to wear, alas.
On the other hand, I hope the loss of my old email service doesn’t cause pandemonium and power outings and Mayan earthquakes etc.
