From Ghoulies and Ghosties,
And long-leggity Beasties,
And all Things that go bump in the Night,
Good Lord deliver us. – Anonymous.
That does it: no more news. Every time I have a look-see on line this evokes gummy panic and/or depression. Pandora’s Hope mentioned in my last entry has been squashed by the avalanche emanating from The Mountains of Ignorance.
Last night I woke from horrible dreams filled with hateful people trying to do me harm. Doesn’t take Freud to deduced this one: watching the news is causing PTSD-like nightmares.
Another matter interfering with my sleep is I am waking with horrible charley-horse cramps in my feet and my toes. They go back and forth between the left foot and the right. They are not sharp but an intense throbbing; it feels like something in my foot is contracting like a overwound clock. Oh the pain. Flexing my foot is of no lasting help. I have to leap out of bed and walk around stomping my foot as if trying to flatten a very skittish cockroach. These middle-of-the-night stomps wake Harper and Someone who both wonder what the hell is going on. Oh the embarrassment.
We are in the transitional time of year here in Phoenix when going to bed is marred by the heat but by the time we wake it is cold outside. Windows are open and fans are a-blowing which helps a little beim schlafengehen but I wakes in the morning with the sensation of freezing. I am counting the days when it becomes hot enough to turn on the AC for more homogenous temperatures.
My bladder, normally the size of a large grapefruit, seems have shrunk to the size of a golf-ball. I am beginning to wake a few times in the night when I used to sleep through without need. Oh the nuisance.
In medieval times* people explained nightmares and cramps to malevolent fairies, ghosts, and succubi. I wouldn’t mind mid-night interruptions if they were caused by a visting handsome incubi but no such luck. Rather than call in an exorcist I need to limit my fluids after 7PM, do some stretches before retiring, and no BBC/CNN. It would also help if Harper didn’t wake me in the night in an urgent need to go outside to stand in the backyard just to stare at nothing.
*Overall a more friendly period.

I’ve had nocturnal leg, foot, thigh and hand cramps for years. At first I kept diet tonic water in the fridge, but that stopped working so I bought dill pickle juice (thanks amazon!) by the gallon. When the price got too exorbitant, and the shipping charges sky high, I Googled other home remedies. Six months ago I started taking over the counter magnesium an hour before bedtime, and Voila! Cramp-free sleep!

I have heard both pickle-juice and Mg++ remedies; while I don’t know of any overt studies supporting either, they are both worth trying !

I would gladly have Henrik. Alas, he has never appeared on this side of the house. Worse luck.

Cold nights have clearly been associated with many trips to the bathroom. I learned that quickly during my camping days in Saugatuck. We try not to watch the news anymore before going to bed, preferring comedy over murder. 😦

That sounds most sensible.

Oh, I feel your pain. Both with the news and the cramping. A (former) nurse friend of mine told me those night cramps are often from being dehydrated. I don’t know if it’s true. But I drink more water and then I have to get up and pee every hour!

I drink a lot of water at night – too much I suppose given the consequential wake ups. This does not seem correlative to cramps. I am sticking with the original notion of electrolyte imbalance or boggarts

I read an informative blog post a few days ago that claimed getting enough sleep is crucial if one is to live to 100.
Are there particular news items that are vexing you these days?

Given all my sleep interruptions I won’t see 60 at this rate.
I am working on going to bed earlier – this is sometimes helpful.
What vexes me in the news? Let me count the ways …..
Trump, abortion laws, environmental matters, Trump shenanigans, tech injustices to name a few.

I can see how you might find these news items distressing. I read somewhere that you were a member of the 2016-2020 GOP, and you must be very distressed that President Trump has less than a year and a half to complete his mandate. But with your help and support, he will win a second term and then have four more years to finish the job.

Sigh! Your words about the friendliness of the Medieval period makes me wistful for the return of the Black Plague. Now those were the days!

“The great mortality’ as it was called in its time shows we have not much changed in our emotions towards an epidemic. I find this both depressing and a comfort.

I’ve had those nights which I had cramps which I had to get out of bed and stomp around like a crazy man – I rarely get through the night with only one visit to the bathroom, sometimes three, More “joys’ of old age.

I have joined you in the cramp stomp dance. No fun this.

To keep myself breathing easy, I never open windows, the thermostat switches from heat to air and back again, on it’s own, maintaining a constant, comfortable atmosphere of nicely filtered air. Try it, you will like it.

Constancy in sleep is a good advice; almost as good as getting a power of attorney 🙂

Just to let you know, you still have problems with your comments. You seem to have checked a button requiring WordPress users to be logged in. I have such an account but do not use it, so in order to comment I have to use my muselar account for junk emails (muselars themselves are not junk-quite the opposite!). WordPress requires me to log in to leave a comment, forcing me to advertise my unused WordPress blog. This is so frustrating that I usually don’t comment on WordPress blogs with this problem. I hope you can fix it!

I rarely get the pee trips, but then again I usually stop drinking anything roughly 2 hours before bed. I also use the restroom just before bedtime as well.
Yes, I hate this time of year. It’s 61 degrees at 10 pm and no wind gets in my apartment. The fans, after working all day, don’t seem to make the place comfortable to sleep. I end up turning on the A/C for about two hours and then turn the fans on low afterward. That seems to do the trick.
About the people out to harm us? We call them Republicans.
