This morning I went to the kitchen to put the kettle on when I found this on the counter. It is curious indeed as it certainly wasn’t there last night. It is quite a spread of chocolate, jellies, and two types of chocolate bunnies.
The Easter Bunny hasn’t visited La Casa de Spo since 2005. The irony is I don’t need no sweets thank you as I need to get in shape and lose some weight in time for my first face-to-face appointment in over a year with The Good Doctor. Happily, my niece AKA Warrior Queen is visiting this weekend. I hope she eats it all, especially the Peeps. I had a Peep once and found it inedible. The package says it is made of nothing but chemicals so there it is. I know some sorts (shady types, well over four feet) who insist Easter is no complete without these spongy ersatz marshmallow monstrosities. I am curious to hear from Spo-fans if you like’em or loathe them.
Although the Easter holiday is the key point of Christianity it sure has heaps of pagan trappings. I remember being told word Easter is derived from the goddess Eostre. She once turned a bird into a rabbit, but forgot to finish the corrective surgery so the newly transformed animal continued to lay eggs. Thus we have The Easter Bunny and not The Easter Chicken. Brother #4 plans to grill The Easter Chickens this evening on the Weber.
Soon the household wakes. I’ve made a pot of coffee for Brother #4 and a pot of tea for SIL #4 and Urs Truly. I’ve made the coffee strong, strong enough to wake the dead. It seems apropos for Easter.

I don’t like them as food but they are entertaining. Every year there is contest here to create a diorama using peeps. There are some very inventive creations.

I can imagine. I wonder how many peeps are bought not for eating but for savagery

Enjoy your company. It looks like they arrived just in time to save you from having to eat that all yourself. I am surprised that chocolate is even allowed in Arizona, given the average temperature there.

p,s. About the Peeps. I don’t think I’ve ever had one, but wasn’t there a controversy once about whether they should be eaten fresh or stale?

When I was a kid back in the Age of the Dinosaurs, Peeps were not imported into Canada, so they were never part of our Easter goodies tradition. I did eat one once as an adult, just out of curiosity, but it was waaaaaaaay too sweet for me. Tooth-achingly sweet.

Are they there yet?

I will eat a peep, but if I buy them, I will eventually eat them all. I do not need that much sugar. So, this year, I will not buy them. I will eat them in any state, but stale is best for me. Impress upon your niece that you expect her to eat them all before she leaves.
Eat the chocolate bunny with the red ribbon as it is Lindt and so smooth.

The only question I have is how do you remember that the last Easter basket was in 2005???

I think that’s the last time I made an Easter basket

Proper chocolate for me only. Those bright colours scream chemicals. Your basket looks pretty but is it for eating?

Not a Peeps family, however See’s Candies are back in production this Easter season and since it is their 100th anniversary this year, I made small Easter baskets this morning. As I get older I find that a little bit of that sugar goes a long long way.

I don’t think I’ve had Sees I remember they had stores about town but they have disappeared

Peeps! Never heard of such creatures! Sounds not like a chocolate egg. Lindt bunnies and coloured-foil eggs are expected fare around these parts. My earliest memory as a child was seeing the foil surprises on Easter morning. Where in the heck had they come from?? They weren’t there when I’d gone to bed!

Good grief. I thought you had an expensive alarm system for your home? How are burglars getting in and leaving candy on your counter?

we seldom turn it on as Harper’s moving about sets off the motion detector.

Tut! The next thing you know some nogoodnik is going to leave you a green bean casserole or Watergate salad.

Happy Easter! I couldn’t eat Peeps. Aren’t they they only candy you can buy that can double as a “black snake” firework when you set enough of them on fire?
April 4, 2021 at 7:40 PM

I should think so; they aren’t primarily for consumption .

I never did like PEEPS but hadn’t had them in so many years that when I tried one a few years ago, I actually enjoyed it. I’ve read that the bunny/egg stories about Eostre were likely modern (late 1800s, Germany, possibly) developments. However, I like the stories.

Did you know when the union went on strike at the Peeps factory, their slogan was “No Justice! No Peeps!” ?

I sense Peeps are similar to Elf on the Shelf, more the source of sadism than respect.
