I’m thinking of going around the property and making a list of all that wants repair. I procrastinate doing this as I know the list will be as long as a CVS receipt and just as depressing. When something breaks down at La Casa de Spo, the general response is to learn to live without it or find an alternative means that doesn’t involve the broken object. I call this ‘The approach” and I am not pleased with it. The TV screen recently gave up the ghost, announcing this by showing everything in morbid dark red and black stripes. Someone is an avid TV watcher; I figured this would be the exception to The approach and he would want to get it repaired or replaced ASAP . Rather, he started watching his shows on the iPad. So there it stands, next to the nonworking gas fireplace.
All the houses in our section are painted shades of brown, what Flannery O’Connor described as ‘bulbous liver-colored monstrosities of a uniform ugliness although no two are alike’. Our abode is painted a light cream with forest green highlights. This was a perfectly acceptable HOA-approved combination at the time of its painting, although there was talk. Nosy neighbors out walking their dogs would stop to ask the painter about (viz. criticize) the color scheme. Over time the green has faded and the current HOA (more draconian than the former) sent us a terse letter telling us we need to paint the house and we can not use those colors anymore. The “approach” is going to be sorely tested by the HOA breathing down our necks.
Recently the dishwasher started acting funny – again. It only runs now on the ‘pots and pans’ setting. We’ve had the repairman over a few times. He does something and it works again for awhile. The stovetop has four settings, one of which does not work. This is tedious especially when I want two large pans going at the same time.
It is not entirely clear what variables contribute to ‘the approach’. Time and money are suspected as the two chief factors. Getting new stovetops, TV screens, mattresses etc. takes time, neither one of us has such. I suspect being cheap figures into things as well. Regardless, it’s time to take action and compose that list and have a sit-down with Someone about what gets addressed first. I wouldn’t mind starting with replacing the 2001 (your read that right) Honda sitting inert in the garage, gathering dust and slowly deflating, but the breaking point will probably be the next letter from the HOA with threats of legal or financial penalties if the paint job isn’t completed. I wonder which shades of brown we will go with. Oh the horror.

I could never live with an HOA. The thought of being told what I can and can’t do, on a property I own and pay taxes for, rankles. Plus I like the fact that all the houses in our neighborhood are individuals and reflect the owners’ personalities. That being said, we try very hard to be good neighbors and not let the outside of our house become an eyesore. We keep the grass cut, the weeds wacked, and the hedges trimmed (especially in the front!)
Our last home was a rental that slowly fell into terrible disrepair and the landlord was a cheapskate who would either ignore problems or (almost worse) try to do the work himself. When we were finally able to buy this house and move out, we swore we wouldn’t let repairs pile up if we could help it. Money is tight, but we try to address problems as soon as they occur and we hire professionals. We both had too many bad landlords in the past!

I do not like repairs sitting unaddressed. It galls me every time to see the broken that/that/and the other. I hope the upcoming season shows some action on these matters.

My list of property repairs: coat and seal the driveway, replace gutter on the back of the house, paint interior particularly where Nyla (the queen cat) has made numerous scratch marks in the walls. Already replaced out of necessity: the entire HVAC system. I am told that should last 15 years. I expect to have moved along by then.
Boo, HOA!

At least the HOA prompts something being done; they aren’t wrong viz. the house front is faded and wants painting. The front needs new stones and a lighting system too. I am surprised they haven’t called that out too.

I will replace a tv. When the eyes on the electric stove started dying, I made do until it heated no more. Then, I pulled off and exchanged the dead eye on the front for a barely-used eye of the same size on the back of the stove. When all the eyes quit working, I bought a new stove. That approach works and is okay with me.
I would hate a neighborhood of shades of brown! At least you have colorful rocks.

I believe my colorful rocks is an attempt to bring some color in an otherwise drab/brown world. It also makes for some individuality viz. ‘mine has some color to it”. Then there is a bit of a defiance to the ‘no colors’ on the house approach.

I think your HOA should rank high on your who needs slapped list. It does take a lot of time to keep a home up to par. Start that list. Even if you slowly check it off, having it on paper will clear up space in your mind.

Go to Homodepot, and buy a cooktop and a dishwasher. They deliver and install, even on Saturdays. They are probably going to send someone to measure to assure the cooktop fits (believe me a 1/4 of an inch matters, I talked them into skipping this step, oh the pain.) He’ll pay the credit card bill when it comes in. Few people ever really die from spending a little money. If a kitchen appliance is more than ten years old, it is almost always better to replace than repair. There have been a lot of changes in design in the past 20 years and parts are getting hard to find for the older models. If you rolled the aging honda onto the driveway, would it distract the HOA from the paint?
September 30, 2021 at 7:12 AM
Urspo
All sensible especially the Honda. I would like to put it out in the yard up on cinder blocks tires off as old cars should be properly aired.
I fear there would be talk but perhaps no one would notice the house.

My HOA is not allowed to comment on colors, per by laws. It would make one think they are protecting property values by painting everything brown. Always , but both condo boards and HOA tend to be the Crazy Anal retentive of the Neighborhood. I was reminded of Silas Marner and his pal Someone, although I know it is not you. Amazon will ship the TV to your door, Samsung is an excellent brand. You have been discussing the dishwasher forever, I will say this, potscrubber or pots and pans is the one for it best to be stalled on . Now is the time to paint or later in the fall. Of these tasks the appliances are not terribly expensive. The house paint for me came a couple of years ago , but my house is all cedar. I think with wood repairs etc about 4600 dollars for premium paint. Don’t go brown it’s depressing. It’s so much easier to run other people’s lives than my own, I need to have pressure cleaning done including a passive cleaning of the roof about $650. Good luck, but to have it off your minds would be so peaceful and priceless. Resale, resale, Resale! That’s what we do these things for mostly.

I have sometimes wondered to show up to the HOA meetings (I think they are open to the public) to see ‘who they are’. I suspect anyone who wants to be a HOA member must have control/power complexes.
On the other hand it is harder to go after a person if you know more about them. HOA members write letter to address-holders not persons. Making myself known may change the dynamics. No harm trying.

Your approach and ours sound oh so similar. Fortunately for us, no HOA to annoy, just each other, neighbors, kids, family, and friends. My older two don’t understand the approach at all, but I think the third has been made of this as well.

Since I wrote this entry another gadget seems to have died off, causing me to snap a tether and vow this weekend to ‘do something’ which is write that list of what needs doing. It is a first step; it will feel liberating to do.

Home ownership can be so overwhelming at times, and the HOA takes it to a whole new level. I have several friends in their 60s who have only rented and never owned. Sometimes I see the wisdom in that. At least the list-making will help you get a handle on the things that need doing. Then maybe you and Someone can sit down with that list, and a plate of pumpkin snicker-doodles and begin to prioritize. 🎃

I worry what Someone will do in reaction. However it will answer some questions as to ‘why’ things are avoided. Worries about money? Time? Getting in touch with how bad things are?
Nothing in life is to be feared, but understood.

“…takes time, neither one of us has such.”
Stop and smell the roses, sir. Make time for happiness. A new stovetop will make you happy.
September 30, 2021 at 7:19 AM

a new stove top with four proper eyes would make me very happy.
I suppose it is not as vital as painting the house but there it is.
I suspect the list will have it near the top – the stove top.

I like this advice. Mr Urspo, you probably like to cook sometimes. Try this, and see how it goes.
Also, try to not worry about the HOA too much. They are always geriatric old a**holes who don’t have anything to do, so they try to make everyone else miserable.

I do not understand why you are talking of replacing things. Aren’t you the one who wants to get rid of all your stuff and live like an ascetic? Who needs a TV? Who needs a Honda? Who needs a dishwasher? Who needs a stove? Who needs a HOA? Off to the curb it goes!
September 30, 2021 at 7:26 AM
Urspo
What I want in the house falls into two categories:
a) what is needed
b) what provides happiness.
I don’t need a TV so that is least on the list to replace.
I don’t need a new Honda but I would like it gone. It takes up space and looks awful every time I see it.
Dishwasher is probably an (a) thing but gives me (b) knowing I don’t have to wash dishes by hand.
Stove top is more (b) than (a) especially when I am making soup.
The HOA is neither (a) nor (b); they can go to the curb.

Regarding individualizing your own how, the buzzer-buttons in my apartment building were all red. I painted mine blue so that I could just tell people to press the blue button. They have since have replaced the whole board, and I have not gotten around to personalizing my own button again. The Chinese system of button identification is complicated (no big surprise), and I have even had local people call me up because they couldn’t figure out which button to press.

Had my own battles with the HOA though Boss formerly and a friend currently HOA prez. Thank my present (relo) pain to be free of any HOA, the architecture, landscape and other committees, arbitrary rule enforcement. Cozy up to a legal eagle to determine how long and sharp the teeth of the HOA document. Bite back if possible with colors of your choosing and petunias in your side yard if you like. But check first on enforcability. Other than that, shock someone by picking a project and doing it despite Someone dragging feet. Someone will get over it. You gain a sense of accomplishment, completion, and maybe cleaner dishes or a better Roku stream. Go for it, man! G’luck!

These common factors are probably part of the procrastination: nothing goes easy or quickly.
Then I remember the axiom:
“Easy decisions: hard life”
“Hard decisions: easy life”
Braving the time/energy/money/hassles to fix things now may prevent worse things that cannot be avoided.

We call your approach “The Work Around”. Unfortunately, in my family we are very good at figuring out work arounds. BTW I believe that the term you meant was either frugal or parsimonious. My excuse is that I used to work in project management and that making the list and planning the work was like taking work home with me and I was unrrefreshed the next day. I understand your pain.
My dishwasher works well unless dinner involved more than two glasses of wine. When that happens, only sturdier pots and pans get washed until the dishwasher has had a good nights sleep and is fresher and sober in the morning.
If yours is a run of the mill Honda sedan, it may be able to finance some of your repairs given the scarcity of used cars. However, if it is the S2000 two seater, you have a classic that needs to be restored and enjoyed.
More decisions 😁

I am so fed up with the Honda I would pay for someone to come haul it away no questions asked. Someone usually handles the cars and he is not feeling a great need to replace it so there it sits.
We use little soap bricks with red dots on them to put in the dishwasher; we drink the wine ourselves.

If you let the car sit in the garage for another 30 years or so it will be a vintage collectable, assuming there is civilization in 30 years.

Ah, the bane of homeowners everywhere…the dreaded list of “Things that Need to be Done.”
Ask the HOA what colors other than brown are acceptable. Brown, much like my hated cream trim, is SO very drab.
As an aside, the last time I went home for a visit, there was a house that was painted a very BRIGHT and ugly orange…apparently, there was some kind of standoff with the local HOA.

When I lived in Chicago the one story house next to mine the new owners painted a bright lemon yellow. – it was the only one in the neighborhood. On bright wintery snowy days it resembled a fried egg.

These days, I am told, it can take weeks to get replacement appliances. Consider the stove/dishwasher Christmas prizes and possibly order soon.
Call the infernal song worm organisation 1-800-Cars for Kids and they might come get your car and give you a tax deduction if such things matter. My whole town is shades of tan. We lived in an HOA for awhile and they had on their website pages of subtle variations of tan. Ours was toward the lightest tan bordering on cream, but still fell within the approved spectrum. One evening a seemingly heretofore pleasant neighbor who liked her house brown and her wine red came to complain about how we stood out in the landscape and we should repaint. Knowing better than to argue, I told her we would consider our color choices the next time it needed to be painted/ stuccoed. In the morning, our house was still cream colored and she was sober.

Someone did some research on car donation and came up with a lot of horror stories about car donations and their lack of turning money towards charities they are lauding. I remember Kars for Kids (he tells me) was particularly bad, indeed it was on the verge of a scam. It was sad news to learn.
Thus, he is reluctant to just donate the car. I cannot imagine anyone wanting a trade in for it.

I am reminded of an episode of “Frazier” wherein he installed a tasteful door knocker on his condo door. When told to take it down by the tyrannical president of the condo board, our hero ended up running for president himself in an attempt to wrestle control from her. He crashed and burned in the true sitcom style, but the effort was noble.
I have no advice.

You could turn this into a bit of a Lifestyle Blog and give us blow by blow coverage of all the stages and twists and turns in your pending domestic dramas. Although I rather suspect that you busy gents won’t be going down the diy path, you could certainly entertain us with the selection process of tradesmen – like The Bachelor tv show, where you could award the contestants suitably manly substitutes for roses when they get through each elimination round.

I usually go with “the approach”.
I don’t like it either, but when there is no money we have to get creative.
I am a renter, so don’t have to deal with some of the HOA issues.
Say what you will, but as long as the landlord is happy harvesting my wages, and i can still provide a little local color, that is the deal.
It is not an ideal situation. It is not good for the young people, and that is why they leave.
We are suffering from not being educated. We have the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and we have the trump cult.
It is discouraging, but who gave these HOA s the power?
They just a buncha fools.

Barely a month goes by here that something needs repairing. The latest is my army worm devastated backyard. The joys of home ownership. Sometimes I question it but still I would rather have my own place. Bill used to reissue almost everything, he was such a good handyman and I felt very lucky to have married a handyman. Alas, with his blindness it’s up to me yo repair or hire someone yo do it.
