What’s top of my mind: my health insurance. I am sorry to report this is still not settled. Every time I think ‘it’s done and going” something comes up. The latest matter: getting a prior-authorization for my usual meds under the new insurance. The Good Doctor may not be willing or able to do so with the new insurance. If he can’t/won’t do/get a PA, or I have to scramble to find a new GP ASAP…..
Where I’ve been: The neighborhood. As I am not going to the gym these days, for exercise I do a daily walk around the neighborhood after dinner. First part is a 5-10 minute long leisurely staccato dog-walk. Then I drop her off and I go off on my own a fast trot for a total of 20-30 minutes. At this time of year there isn’t really anything to see. It is also twilight so I stay to the main roads lest I am attacked by javelinas or coyotes (it could happen).
Where I’m going: The Opera. Someone reminds me this weekend we have not one but two operas. The one in the morning is “Rigoletto”* “Live from the Met HD” seen at the AMC . That evening, we see the local production of “Carmen”.** I am dubious to sit through either. The latter requires vaccination cards and masks are obligatory. I plan to bolt if there are any shenanigans – or if the singers are less than stellar. It’s one thing to get covid, but it’s another thing to get covid while suffering through a bad production of ‘Carmen’. I’ve heard both operas countless times and I know every note, every stop along the way. As the singers go at it I compare what I hear to previous productions and recordings in my mind. This is why I prefer going to ‘new’ operas or infrequently performed ones so I have no previous expectations.
What I’m watching: History Matters. There is a clever chap on The Tube of Yous who does 5-10 minute-long cartoon bits answering the questions of history. Sometime they are a bit hard to follow as he talks quickly and the cartoon figures often have humorous contents so it is difficult to focus on the visuals and what’s being said. Here’s a typical one. Spo-fans of the Canadian persuasion can tell me in the comments if it is spot-on or not.
What I’m reading: ‘Witches abroad’. Terry Pratchett, whom you may know by his “Good Omens’ they turned into a TV series, wrote a series of fantasy spoof books called “The Discworld series”. It has a few subsets, one titled ‘The Witches” series. I am reading one now. Here’s a taste of his style and wit:
‘It was one of the weak spots of Granny Weatherwax’s otherwise well-developed character that she’d never bothered to get the hand of steering things. It was alien in her nature. She took the view that it was her job to move and the rest of the world to arrange itself so that she arrived at her destination.’
What I’m listening to: Dean Martin. At Christmas I got a sets of CDs of his music, for I was curious to know more about him after hearing a podcast on his life. “That’s amore’ I recognized right away (and thought of Cher) but that was it; the rest of the songs were new to me. Fascinating! My emotional reaction is these are they sound ‘dated’ and ‘quaint’; they are tunes my grandparents would have enjoyed. Mr. Martin had a nice voice and the songs are done well, but not to contemporary tastes, or at least to mine. There are too many violins for my taste. Curious too to consider singers who were ‘great’ in their day but have sort of faded into one-hit wonders, like “That’s amore”.
What I’m eating: Chili and grapefruit. Last weekend I made a crockpot of chili; it was fair. It had basic ingredients and it wasn’t ‘bad’, just uninteresting. Unfortunately there is a lot of the stuff, so I am looking for clever ways to get rid of it. If anyone knows a very good no-rubbish recipe for chili I would be grateful to hear from you the recipe. As for le pamplemousse, it’s that time of year: everyone’s citrus trees put out tons of fruit and all at once. The house across the street every January they harvest a dozen plastic bags-worth of large yellow grapefruit, which they put out at curbside, for anyone who wants them. I got me a bag, and I eat one each day for small chocolate cone. Alas, the others are already taken, so my ten freebies is all I get this year.
Who needs a good slap: Customer Service. I am dealing with various health insurance matters; the staff at work are trying to renew prior-authorizations for the new year; Someone is trying to get tax forms on one of his pensions. We are all dealing with long holds and when we finally get someone, they often tell us to call someone else, which is repeated and nothing gets accomplished. I try to remember many people are calling at this time of year for the same reasons, and the representatives must but short-staffed and haggard. This empathy isn’t enough (alas) to keep cool and not become frustrated if not cross.
On a 1-5 rating scale, I give Customer Service at Cox 4 slaps and thems at CIGNA 3. On the positive, Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, MI continues to have a 5-star customer service rating for response, help, and genuine cheerfulness. Sometimes I wonder if I order things just to have a positive customer service experience.
What I’m planning: A medical conference. I’ve decided to put in for time off and put down a deposit for my first conference since 2019. It is in June in Lost Vegas. This has the advantage it is within driving distance, allowing me to any funny business with the airlines. Someone says he will go too, of which I am glad, for I hate being alone in hotels. The conference takes place at some dive called Caesar’s Palace, not that I will see much of it, but Someone has to be entertained while I sit in a conference learning the latest on the treatment of addictions like gambling and shopping. Fingers crossed it will be safe enough to do. I am not a fan of Lost Vegas, for I am not a gambler, but they have some nice eats there and it’s amusing to watch people doing all sorts of shenanigans for a Hershey bar.
What’s making me smile: The humidifier. My state is sad one that ‘what makes me smile’ is an appliance, but there it is. I have a new one that replaces the old one that cracked when I dropped it (oh the horror). It combines the best of the senses: the fine steam that emanates from the top looks like a tea kettle, making billows of moisture that cascade down and disappear into the air. It has a fountain-like gurgle to it, just loud enough to soothe but not too loud to disrupt sleep. The tank has a pale blue nightlight, that I can watch (if I want to) the waterfall. I don’t know if it does any good viz. adding moisture for better breathing, but it is a comfort to have it, and fall asleep to its sonorous sound.
*It ends badly
**It also ends badly.

Ah, “That’s Amore”.
When we heard it in England in the mid-1950s, there were no Italian restaurants, at least outside the big cities, and most people had never heard of pizza, so we had difficulty understanding the first line. I thought it was, “When the moon hits your eye like a big piece of pie…”

The podcast of his life conveyed he felt limited as an Italian-type he would be discriminated against so he kept rather conservative and modest expectations until later in life, when he was more ‘what the hell’

Dear Spo, i am sorry to hear about your health insurance woes.
I wish i had some useful advice.
I am on Medicaid or maybe it is Medicare. It is a government program. The provider is called Molina and i have a little plastic card. It allows me to go see the doctor, and it pays for my 2 prescriptions. If i had diabetes i would probably be fukked.
I am already 64 years so this is bonus time.
I am sorry that you are having this problem .

thank you
it will all work out in the end, somehow.

re: that history matters clip, I’d say not bad but not spot on either. His mispronunciation of the name, although slight, irritated me. Definitely not true that Colonial Newfoundland was Protestant only. It has been pretty much 50:50 Protestant:Catholic through history. English merchants brought over Irish workers to run the Fishery; some would say that much of the economy was based on indenture to merchants. Communities had Protestant parts and Catholic parts. There were instances of sectarian riots in the past. He skims over World War I which had a traumatic and defining effect on the province’s history. (Look up Beaumont-Hamel). I believe that the Commission of Government (1934-49) did improve the economy through the presence of US troops helped a lot. (on a different note, look up the incredible story of Lanier Phillips). There are conspiracy theories to this day over those referendum votes, and that the result was rigged. Enough.
Besides, from a different perspective Canada joined Newfoundland in 1949.

It must be difficult to summarize complicated history matters into 5-10 minute summary lectures, and make them entertaining too. I very much appreciate your input on this specific one. I remember losing a ‘how well do you know Canada?” quiz by one point as I was wrong about the last province to join the rest.

Sounds like the slaps should start with the medical provider and insurance companies. I’ve been doing my 32 hours of CE for the biennium ending in 2024 , finished and done and new state license applied for. And money sent. I’m going out for necessities which is our usual life. My dogs are unhappy I think it is our third day of rain , but don’t think that can be because we had frost on Monday. I’m reading the New Yorker as usual . I didn’t like my virtual CE courses, my first time, so I am glad the paper New Yorkers have finally caught up. I would sit through Carmen, but not for Covid. 25 per cent of the tax returns for last year have not been processed many agencies are not accessible. This was the same when Trump was President it just is being broad cast on high beam these days by main stream media. I definitely don’t llike Dino Crucetti, Dean Martins actual name. I like some of the Martin and Lewis comedy , and there are even nudes of the two in non compromising positions. We eat a lot of spaghetti chili not so much and grapefruit, not at all. This is citrus time generally I think. I know the frost we had should sweeten the crop. I would like to see Vegas, but have a legitimate reason to go. I own a dehumidifier so that should tell you our state of affairs . Rambling today.

Don’t forget, we have a possible date in the future in “Lost Vegas.” Pat and I plan to get married by an Elvis impersonator and we needs two witnesses. Who better or more appropriate than our opera loving friends you and Someone! This is all contingent of course that we survive this COVID nonsense.

Lost Vegas? I would have thought Palm Springs. Either way I would be honored so, I will make a lovely bridesmaid I wonder if I will cry.

So very sorry to know that your insurance situation is not yet settled. That is incredibly frustrating, and definitely worth giving out a slap or two. Meanwhile it’s good to hear that you and Someone can make the trip to Las Vegas, even if you will be doing CE for part of the time. A change of scene is almost always a good thing. I have not heard of Zingerman’s, but I just checked out their website, and it is certainly full of appealing treats! Is there anything special
that you would recommend?

Run, don’t walk, to Zingermans. When I lived in Ann Arbor I was bedazzled by their wares, especially their sandwiches. Their goal: provide much better tasting things. They are not snobs, they are enthused to share the ‘best ‘ of whatever they can find with the world. Even their peppercorns are superior.

I’ll offer one thing that made me smile, this:
” It’s one thing to get covid, but it’s another thing to get covid while suffering through a bad production of ‘Carmen’.”
Over the phone customer service is so bad sometimes that you find yourself stunned hen it’s good.

I am glad I made you smile.
I have to always recall the lousy customer service is seldom due to the poor overworked/understaffed minion who finally gets to my phone call. It is not always easy, as they are the representatives to the companies.

I spent the 1970’s, listening to music of the 40’s and 50’s, Dean, Frank, and others, I still have eclectic taste in music. Drives others crazy. Docs not in network, something you are usually on the other side of every January. Single payor. Put all of the docs on a single payroll, and do away with all of the payment overhead. Enjoy Vegas, a fun town to walk around and find a wee dram.

The Newfoundland video is accurate enough for a 4 minute video. Martin is right, though, that Newfoundland was historically not as solidly protestant as presented.

“It’s one thing to get covid, but it’s another thing to get covid while suffering through a bad production of ‘Carmen’”. That, my dear, is going to get quoted. I never liked Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, or any of that ilk. We have Cox here and, sad to say, it’s about the best cable company we’ve had. You don’t know true horror until you’ve dealt with Comcast. I just got a new humidifier too; makes a world of difference to my comfort. I only use the steam type as the fine white dust from the ultrasonics drives me batty.

I used to have Cox, and they were okay at best. I have Spectrum now, and I don’t have to bother them at all since the Internet signal is stronger.
Some dive called Caesar’s Palace…. LOL! I miss that place, and the shopping center that’s there. That might be the only reason I’d go to Lost Wages one of these years.

I remember walking through it one time I was there and thought it an absolute nightmare. Someone, clever man he is, is scouting location for better deals. The conference is there but perhaps we can stay somewhere else more fun and less expensive.

Ooh, I like the idea of that humidifier! I’m thinking about it. As for “the good doctor,” does he have a good reason why he wouldn’t be willing to do the prior authorization? Doesn’t sound so good to me.
January 26, 2022 at 9:12 AM

It may be projection on my part. Doctors loathe doing paperwork especially prior-auths as they are called, particulary for meds already going. He may be swamped in the new year with them, mine is only one of many.
My matter is urgent as without these Rx my health could go rapidly bad. I may have to just buy them, again, $$$

Wait a minute–is it ok for you to be eating grapefruit? I heard that it interferes with a lot of medications, especially those for blood pressure.
–Jim

You are correct grapefruit and many Rx have a drug interaction, usually towards RAISING the Rx dose in the blood stream. Patients have learned they get more ‘buzz’ on the their xanax when taken with grapefruit. I check my blood pressure regularly; no changes are seen despite the daily grapefruit.

It was explained to me that some drugs, statins in particular, are difficult for our bodies to absorb/process – so much so that dosages are actually “supercharged” to ensure adequate delivery. Something (an enzyme?) in grapefruit enhances the body’s absorption rate, easily resulting in overdose if consumed regularly. As our intake of grapefruit is far more variable than a standard dosage of the meds, it is advised to avoid it. My doc assured me that an occasional serving would likely do no harm but recommended against Salty Dogs as a primary libation of choice. Is this consistent with your understanding?

Not a huge music fan here, and older than you, nephew, but I do remember the Ratpack guys from the 50s when I was a kid. I kind of found them distasteful even then. But I did think Dean Martin was much handsomer and a better singer than Frank. Have you played any FS yet? I would be interested in your opinion of his singing.

I may have figured out how to finally comment again through Twitter log in. Word Press apparently does not like me. I think you are smart to have a plan to exit if you are not truly enjoying the performance for whatever reason. Maybe this is the future-our free time is measured in quality via the length we’ll wear a mask test. I’m sorry for the ongoing insurance woes.

I am glad you made it through; I have similar problems getting into Blogger.com.
I’ve heard tell in the past people went in and out of performances as they pleased; people weren’t expected to sit through them from start to finish. I don’t know how disruptive that was for the audience.

I have a chronic cough – the WORST thing in the world to have during a pandemic! – and I bought a humidifier to see if it would help. After a month I ended up throwing it out – I’d wake to moisture running down my windows and I was worried that mould would start to grow.

The short of it yes it is a good story about NewFoundland and Labrador. The only thing that is not totally correct is the map. Labrador was taken from the Quebec territory and given to the new Province. The Premier of Newfoundland who made all this happen was Joey Smallwood who is an icon of a man in this story. Would not have happened without him.
