What’s top of my mind: The Elantra. I worked from home yesterday as the car was dripping oil onto the garage floor and I would not risk driving about town. “Tim” from AAA came by around four to drag it away to the new Hyundai dealership (new to us anyway) for its appointment. I hope it’s as simple as a leaky or faulty do-hickey that just needs replacement or tightening. Visits to the mechanic are never inexpensive, so there goes out more money. Working from home felt 2020. Harper liked it; she figured I was home for her sake.
Where I’ve been: The Cookbook shelf. On the top shelves of the food pantry sits my collection of cookbooks. I have a love-hate relationship with them. I love them as some of them are my favorite books, full up with memories of times and kitchen past. On the other hand, they all seem to whimper whenever I go in the pantry as if to plead to take me down and use me, which I never do these days. I suppose I should get rid of the ones I never use/will use but I don’t have the heart.
Where I’m going: Total Wine. The wine-fridge is bereft of ‘table wine”; all it has is fancy and expensive bottles, which we are saving for ‘special occasions’ that never happen. What we need – what I want rather – is some ‘cheap whites for summer sipping’, preferably until ten dollars. Anyone can buy expensive stuff if you have the money, but what’s really fun is finding good-enough wines as bargain prices. Thems who work at Total Wine have little signs of some of the offerings. These are along the line of “Pam recommends” with a few words from Pam on how she likes it so. These may be the equivalent of ‘summer rain’ perfume, but I hope they are sincere. I usually come back from the place with a cardboard box of a dozen roses and whites, for around 100$.
Do you have any good inexpensive recommendations for wine?
What I’m watching: Letterkenny. Someone loves this show, but I can’t make up my mind. The writing is clever and the actors deliver their lines that beat an Edward Albee play. Most of the time these lines go whizzing by like rockets with Canadian lingo for which I haven’t a clue. I find all characters disturbing and they make me wonder how on earth anything gets accomplished in this macabre Lake Woebegone-like town. We watch episodes at supper time.
What I’m reading: The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. A book with all sorts of fancy fustian words; what more can I ask for? Here’s an example:
looseleft [adj.] feeling a sense of loss upon finishing a good book , sensing the weight of the back cover locking away the lives of characters you’ve gotten to know so well.
What I’m listening to: Attila. A couple I know who are quite experienced in classical music (one worked for the Cleveland Symphony) had me over to take away as many CDs as I wished. They weren’t playing them anymore. What I took were mostly operas I’ve been too cheap to buy but wouldn’t mind having a copy of. One of them is Verdi’s “Attila”. It’s about … wait for it…. Attila The Hun. For thems not familiar with opera, if I asked you to conjure up clichés about them, almost all stereotypes fit nicely into this cheesy endeavor. It isn’t performed much anymore compared to Mr. Verdi’s later works, which are better and more likely to get butts in the seats. Still, there is a camp element to “Attila” that makes it jolly good fun. I’ve seen it once or twice and I just hate it when directors try to make it serious or worse set it in some contemporary setting ‘up. What’s called for are captive maidens in fur bikinis and dudes with oh-so-not-politically-correct Charlie Chan mustaches.
What I’m eating: Salmon. During a rare time when we went grocery shopping separately, I brought home a large bag of frozen salmon filets while Someone purchased a large bag of salmon burgers. We are up to our oxters in salmon. Happily we like the stuff, so we aren’t too sick of it yet. Salmon gets into most everything these days, including scrambled eggs and on top of vegetarian rice bowls. I prefer filets to the burgers as once upon a time I got very sick soon after eating one of the latter. I daresay it was the mayo-based condiment and not the salmon burger. Regardless, I can’t help but retch a little when having one.
Who needs a good slap: There are no lack of deplorable politicians who have not honor nor integrity. However, I want to avoid these as too easy, too obvious, and slapping them feels like ‘stooping’ to their level of degeneracy. I will go with The Texas Republican Party which is reported to me to have adopted the horseshit belief homosexuality is an ‘abhorrent lifestyle choice’. Must we go over this again that people don’t choose their sexual orientation? The GOP makes up what the want to believe and shouts it long enough to make a lie a truth.
On a 1-5 scale, I give the Texas GOP five slaps.
What I’m planning: Fondue. I have a Crate & Barrel fondue pot with 6-8 long slender two-pronged forks. am fond of fondue and it’s a pity the pot is not used often. Someone doesn’t care for such. However, in a few weeks it will be my birthday. I was deprived a P.E.I lobster dinner, so my consolation will be a fondue. I get to figure out which vegetables and imperial tid-bits to use for dipping (Someone is allergic to shrimp) as well as the fondue itself. Jolly good fun!
Do you have a fondue pot? Do you ever use it?
What’s making me smile: My blogger buddies and the Spo-fans. I was woebegone in last week’s Ws. Afterwards, comments came from folks never heard from before, long time lurkers and silent Spo-fans all thanking me for my scribbles. Later that week, while making ’rounds’ on blogs, a few mentioned me in their entries, saying similar. This is better than all the gummi-bears in Germany and all the rats at Tewkesbury. This is what makes me smile. Whenever I need a grin, I think of you all.

Fondue. The last time I had it was in 1991. I remember the specific occasion. Sounds good.

1991 must have been quite memorable to recall it so!

Ya gotta get that car fixed , sorry that you won’t be there to speak to a service advisor in person. Whatever it costs will be cheaper than a new car. I’m betting gaskets at worst or a bad job putting on the filter. You also never mention the backstory in many of your comments. So giving an opinion on some of your issues is speculation. All the sugar in wine always made my head cloudy the next day , never really liked wine. I meant to stop you last comment or two ago when you mentioned southerners and sweet tea. I drink unsweetened iced tea, We use Luzianne teabags , we don’t drink it often as we subsist on bottled water. I love LetterKenny, the one hottie may influence that. I want my men in fur bikinis and no obscure sorrows. I don’t think I would like a salmon burger. I hear a lobster roll these days in Maine is 40 dollars or close. I like regular salmon baked. Many need slapped , the usuals . Amazed so many are a using the gays as a punching bag during Pride month. One of my favorite meals ever was a fondue broth with meats , like beef and chicken , etc and a granite slab, on which to cook things at 700 degrees. You are well loved and well deserving. Of it. Sorry long comment.

We are eating ‘worse’ these days viz. cheaper things and less quality goods.

The car – it is only money – and we might as well enjoy it while we are here (and you will look so good in a new BWM.) (Just kidding.) My ex had a fondue pot, I was thinking of lobster dipped in cheese, made my eyes roll. You are often mentioned of thought of in my posts.

You’re being VERY kind to the Texas GOP. I’d like to get a line forming so we ALL can give them five slaps each.

Alas, they do it as it works, and people rally around it.
They wouldn’t if it cost them support.

I don’t have a fondue pot. Can you slap Lauren Boebert next week just for being the most deplorable politician to ever be elected in Colorado? 5 slaps are needed.
June 22, 2022 at 6:48 AM

I do not know this Boebert, but I can only imagine. The GOP candidates seem to have no limits how nasty they can be to show they are more right than the next one.

Today is a very Marie Kondo World of Ws. I am suffering whiplash. You love the cookbooks! No, they whine and make you feel guilty! There is not enough wine in the house! You got a bunch of CDs! The fondue pot survived the “get rid of one thing a day” purge and now it is your birthday present! The GOP sparks joy! No, they deserve slaps and uncensored swears! What a rollercoaster of emotions.
Personally I am happy that you stayed home to keep Harper company. Is it true that now the pandemic is over (har har) you are travelling to the office every day? I thought that there was supposed to be a “new normal”? Little wonder that the Bosses can’t hold on to psychiatrists.
Since you are at home anyways please give Harper a hug and a pet from us. She is a dear.

Harper is in her dotage. She looks so tired/sleepy all day and when she gets up she doesn’t mover much. It makes me sad to think of it. I wonder how much longer she will be with us.

Oh, I had one of those C&B fondue pots at my old apartment. Sadly, I got rid of it when I purged my place before I moved. It hadn’t been used in years, and I lost most of the little forks that came with it. I also got rid of a fondue cookbook as well. I miss them both.
Perhaps I need to get another one soon?
June 22, 2022 at 8:54 AM

I think fondue pot purchases should come with vows to regularly use it, at least 2/year, otherwise no.

I have two electric fondue pots, one for broth-based fondues, one for cheese fondues, plus a set of fondue plates and a staggering assortment of fondue forks. It’s probably been 25 years or more since I’ve used them? Every time I have a cull, sort and clearout of unused items, they somehow never get jettisoned. Every once in awhile, I think “I should make a fondue” but then I never do. I need 5 slaps!
June 22, 2022 at 8:55 AM
Urspo
You need a fondue party! Invite over your nearest and dearest and have at it! I suppose one of the reasons fondue pots aren’t used much is the notion of dipping into a communal pot, so screen your invites for diseases.

Fur bikinis…lol.

Give Katie Britt 5 slaps here in Alabama…everyday!

I still have three fondue pots – one for oil/meats, one for cheese, and one for chocolate – all Sterno fueled and not one of them out of its original box in at least a quarter century. But the memories of Friday night fondue parties we used to have in the late 70s and 80s – the kind that lasted til the wee-hours and required all of Saturday morning to recover from. Numerous bottles of white wine shared among intimate friends, affordable authentic Swiss gruyere cheese, contraband ganga, marathon pinochle/hearts/Uno, with Anne Murray (!) records on the stereo… OMG, fun times, for certain, but so damned long ago that spellcheck now highlights “Sterno” as a typo with no suggested correction.
I couldn’t agree more with your slaps for Texas Republicans, though through their apparent acquiescence with much of the agenda, I suspect the slaps might be justified for much of that southeastern Cracker Barrel corridor of the country, bless their hearts. Faulkner suggested that Emily be given her damned rose in 1930, but apparently he was too subtle. So the same necrophilic attachment to distorted recollections of a past that never existed continue to plague the entire nation to this very day.
June 22, 2022 at 12:21 PM
Urspo
You remind me out in the garage is a copper pan that sits over a stand in which to place a sterno can. Neither one of us can remember where we got it, or why. It had to be a hand-me-down from somebody. It has never been used and I don’t know how either. As I type this I may haul it indoors for a look-see to see if it may be whimsy to try just for once.
June 22, 2022 at 12:45 PM
BadNoteB
Your description sounds like a chafing dish and if copper, probably worthwhile to trying to sell online. Or I hear that Sunday Drag Brunches are the de novo rage, in case you feel like whipping up a tray of Eggs Benedict and resurrecting that jazzy red heels fantasy 😉
June 22, 2022 at 1:00 PM
BadNoteB
Oh, for use: if double panned, the bottom pan is filled with hot water; the top pan (insert) with lid holds the food. The water distributes heat from the Sterno flame to avoid hot spots that might burn the food while maintaining safe holding/serving temperature in the insert pan throughout your gala. Same principal as a Bain Marie or double-boiler…

That sounds correct; now I definitely want to have a look-see.

Wine: recommend a ‘box o’ wine’ – something Pinot grigio-ish to keep in the ‘fridge chilled and at the ready. I understand that, unlike a proper wine bottle, there is less oxidation in the wine boxes. Wine and spirits are not consumed rapidly in this household (I believe that I can still find a few bottles of Anchor Steam’s Christmas offering – it was really quite good), so stability after opening is a consideration.
Keep the cookbooks without any shame or guilt. Think of them now as books of very short plays with a cast of characters. I believe that MFK Fisher wrote about cookbooks as reading materials during reduced circumstances. I think that she was on to something. They serve as a reminder that whatever difficulty one may be facing, there is the possibility of better days ahead. And, as we all know kitchen gadgets and cookery books are aspirational. They may not reflect how we live on a day to day basis (see my copies of Mrs. Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking), but they may indicate how we want to live – generously and with hospitality.
And yes, I have a fondue pot from the 1970s. I’ve loaned it out more than I have actually used it myself. However it was a gift from my mother and I retain it for both sentimental and aspirational reasons.

Boxes of wine!
I forgot all about them! Talk about ‘thinking outside of the box”!
My experiences with wine boxes is very positive. It is decent wine and the box keeps it good for folks like me who will sip off it over a long time period. And it’s so convenient! yes yes yes next time I am at Uncle Albertsons I get me a box, no need for a trip to Total Wine now.

Summer wines, you say. I like the Vinho Verdes they are mostly under 10 bucks — a little frizante, a little less alcohol. Gazela is the one my supermarket sells, but Trader Joe’s has one that without a bottle handy, I am at a loss to remember its name. Total, I am sure offers many more. I also have had an Australian Yalumba “Y” Viognier from Total Wine. It’s one of their Winery Direct wines I think. So it is often discounted 15% or so. In my neck of the woods is about $11 normally. It is good for having people over because it seems to be common ground for both the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc crowds. When you head to the Hyundai dealer look at the Santa Cruz it’s one of those car/truck vehicles. As a boy of 7, I liked the Chevy El Camino, so well into my 7th decade, it is no surprise I like the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

I throughly enjoy your writings Spo. I check you daily but I don’t comment that much. I enjoy a sweet white wine. I have bought from a little German winery community ( town ) for over 25 years called Hermann, Missouri. I lived in Hermann when I moved to Missouri in November of 79 for 5 years. This particular winery has an authentic German restaurant Vintage 1847 is the name of the restaurant and Stone Hill Winery is the name of the winery. Many still speak German and it’s taught in the school there.

I had a friend when I was young who married a Hungarian named Attila. When I expressed surprise (at the name not the nuptials) she said it was a very popular boys’ name and the good citizens of Hungary love their famous Hun. That was me told!
Fondue: not since the 70s. Ours was orange and we loved it! Have been watching a show on the telly set in San Diego in the 80s (“Physical” – I can recommend!) and a scene is set in a fondue restaurant! Who knew such things existed?!

We do not have a fondue pot, I really do not like fondue. However Raclette I love. As for the GOP I really don’t understand that party anymore it seems to attract all the kooks in the USA. The GOP has become an excuse for poor governance. As for wines, a word to the wise, wines do not keep, drink them up even if you think they are expensive, it is meant to be drunk, so go ahead enjoy.

Hi, I just discovered your blog via Pipistrello (we are both convinced that we are soul sisters) and when I read in your last blog “Good” that you also adore Alice Thomas Ellis – I copied her “Someone” as protection for privacy in a book of mine too, and used “Son Number One” though I only have one (proud 2.02m) – I was caught.
I will drop in here as often as my triplet-grandchildren (almost three years old, living in Bavaria) and my busy life divided between Berlin, where I live, and Bavaria, where I live, and the Netherlands (where the Flying Dutchman lives) gives me time to enjoy your blog.

Fancy label wine and “special occasions”? Hmm. You feel a need for a passable red for your leg-o-lamb? No trip to Discount Joe’s. Pick one on hand from the wine cabinet. Experience says you’ll say after, “Glad I didn’t save that for Philomena’s visit in October – it was overrated and overpriced but “okay” for the lamb.”

I too have a large stash of Cookbooks for Gluten Free, Low Carb, and Slow Cooker meals, and know I should use them more for new dishes and inspiration. They are now shelved across from my basement home office desk so I see them every day in the hopes it will entice my to start perusing them more. Cup of tea.
I love certain Salmon dishes but have never tried a Salmon burger, so I guess it’s time. I also love Fondue and it is in our monthly dinner rotation. In fact, we’re having it tonight when the BFJ arrives.
Drink the good wine now. Light the candles. Eat the treats. Wear the nice clothes. Splurge on the luxury item. YOLO. Stop waiting for some imaginary “right time” to enjoy the good things in life.
