First of all I want thank the folks who wrote supportive comments to yesterday’s lugubrious post. I almost didn’t post it. Things are tough. We aren’t allowed to pick the times we live in; we are only given the choice to rise to the occasion or to succumb. I hope do the right thing.
Today is Father’s birthday; he is 86. Brothers #1-4 have been texting back and forth trying to come up with some sort of prize for the occasion. Being blind, we can’t give him books and he has all the audio-books he needs for a lifetime. “No prizes!” he states (sounding like his mother) “I just want phone calls from my sons”. I hope Brother #3 and #4 and family will get together and grill something scrumptious and everyone has a good snort in his honor. I know I will.
I made my first loaf of bread In the Spo-fan Memorial Mix-master.* For kneading, it beats my hand-work by by a country mile. It was the best loaf I’ve made so far and I was pleased as Punch. I grade it at a B+/A-. I didn’t bake it long enough, and I think I should ‘knead’ it longer next time. My next loaf should be an ‘A”. After I get the hang of white I will try rye or ‘egg’ or something.
Going to the gym is discouraging. I try to go and do something every day but something always manages to get in the way. Last week it was car troubles. I am going a few times a week rather, which is better than not going at all. Whenever there are missed days, it feels like I am ‘starting over at the beginning’. How soon my strength leaves me! I would like to get some muscle on me but at most it feels like the best I can do is keep from losing more. At nearly sixty years old, this may be all I can do. Alas, Babylon! I fear I will never become one of Fearsome Beard’s pin-ups. I used to worry the fellows at the gym were all looking at me in contempt but I realize this is not so. They don’t look at me at all; they think I’m hopeless. ho ho ho.
It has been a long while since I made a Spo-shirt; I can’t remember when. I’ve been wondering about the the ‘why’ of this. It’s mostly because I have sunk all my sewing energy into making masks and I have plenty of Spo-shirts already. I don’t need more. Many don’t fit anymore, worse luck, but I don’t want to give them to Goodwill. I wonder would it cheer me up to make a new one (XL this time). After all there’s nothing like a new frock to brighten up your day. At home in the drawer there are two rolls of cotton fabric from which to choose: #1 is white with black abstract black strokes, it resembles a Jackson Pollack painting. #2 is a fabric of U of M maize and blue “Ms” I bought for an alumnus who changed his mind he thought it too gaudy to wear to a parking lot pregame party.* I may make both into shirts and keep one of them, putting the other one up for raffle.
*Can you imagine?
*The Kitchen-Aid. I have a vague memory of some relation referring to all stirring appliances as mix-masters. Mix-master is a bit more fun to say too. The bread recipe was given by Lori (the dear!) and made in the Kitchen-Aid donated by another Spo-fan (also a dear!). There is lots of love going into my baking.

Happy Birthday to Father , 86 years old I wish him as many as he wants . I’m also excited that your Bread came out ok . I took my mother to the dermatologist yesterday for skin cancer work, she was very happy to have it done. Except it’s a Mohrs surgery next time. Shhh! Don’t tell yet! My father in 2003 passed away on todays date . Hard to believe it’s been twenty years almost. As for Fearsome Beards pictures, neither of us looked like that when we were thirty. Sorry and neither does Fearsome Beard. You can have all those pictures at newTumbl.com , and way much more trust me. Prosit! HBD to Papa Smurf! 🎈🎊🎈

I adjure from tumbling down the Tumbl lest it evoke envy and negative comparison. Also I don’t know exactly where it is located. Good.

Happy Birthday to your Father, congrats on the bread, many successes to come, I should come bake with you one weekend, we’d have to do it the day of a potluck so we’d have someplace to take all of the goodies. I don’t use recipes (why does that sound dirty.) Move everyday, it keeps the vultures from circling.

Even the high-priest cook himself, Mr. Lopez-Alt doesn’t go with recipes per se after all he did to finetune them. My main cook-man Mr. Adam Regausea is all about ‘eyeing it’.

Well done on the bread frontier! You are inspiring me to attempt something which I’ve wanted to do for a while: pizza dough. For some reason I have a fear of using yeast. Too much trouble? Don’t know. I understand your father only wanting phone calls. After a while it is hard to choose a presents for people who want for nothing. Congratulations also on even going to the gym a few times a week. You are doing better than most! -Jenn

The Mix-master (or so I call it) is almost disappointing how simple it is viz. place all in the bowl and turn it on and presto! Dough. Jolly good fun!

I think I remember Mix Masters. My mother may have had one.

Now that I flinging about the name I ought to look it up to learn what precisely is a mix-master and how it differs from a Kitchen-aid.

I’ve always been a believer in not going to the gym every day. Three to Five days worked best for me. Now, I stick to three. And you’re definitely not too old to build muscle. As for being looked at with contempt, most people at the gym are thinking the same thing. As for the others, fuck ’em. You’re not there for them. You’re there for yourself.

One must have time to recuperate, depending on what you are doing.
I have seen men at the gym admiring the scrawny and the overweight for their determination to be there regularly and try – good for them!

Don’t give up on the gym. It just takes more time to see results when you are older. Are you drinking a protein shake after the gym or eating a meal? The other members are probably looking at you because you are a very handsome man.

I assure you the lads (20-30) are not looking at me, fine with me.
On the other hand they tend to be so absorbed in what they are doing (and on their phones in the breaks) I can look at them all I want.

If it feels like punishment, it probably is. There are a multitude of ways to get exercise and stay relatively fit, and the gym is just one of them. Explore other avenues that may be more satisfying to you. I once enjoyed daily gym visits. I no longer do. I now enjoy getting exercise on my own.

I should clarify I like going to the gym; I feel good lifting weights, even when I fail to meet the expectations. The elliptical can be a bit of chore, but it is not a deal-breaker. I gave up running when I realized I didn’t like it. I would swim if I trusted the pools.

One thing I learned during the COVID lockdown is that you can stay fit at home despite not being able to get to the gym. Exercise bikes are not too expensive. A few dumbbells and a set of stretch bands with handles can help maintain your strength. Climbing stairs, running, walking…. there are many options.

Well said and quite sensible. I remind myself a long walk ‘counts’.

Happy Birthday to your Dad — I hope he enjoys his special day! Glad your bread turned out well too. So much easier to knead with a “mix-master” (I remember that term too, lol). Kneading by hand sucks. That’s why, when I make bread on occasion, I make a no-knead bread that can be done in white, whole wheat or savoury (garlic/rosemary).

I am certain my by-hand kneading would improve if I could see someone do it who knows what they are doing. Some day I hope.

Happy Birthday to father! I’d get him something he can taste, like his favorite meal or dessert. I can’t think of anyone that would turn that down.
If the gym doesn’t feel like a welcoming place anymore, I’d consider buying fitness equipment for the home. I have a recumbent exercise bike, a weight bench and adjustable weights.
Video games can also do the trick. Remember that Zumba game I bought for my Nintendo Switch? They have other exercise games for that system as well. Maybe take a look at that?

Thank you kindly for the ideas. The gym is OK for now – provided I go regularly. I still hope some is better than none.
Father got a ‘perch dinner’ I am told so he was happy.

I am glad you are getting to the gym.
Is Papa Spo easily able to call his friends now? I remember you taught him how to use Facetime via Alexa or something? I concur that finding a good birthday prize sounds difficult.
As for Spo-shirts: I notice many of the fellows on Fearsome’s blog are so poor they cannot afford clothing. You might consider being charitable and sewing them some shirts so they do not freeze in the wintertime. Alternatively maybe you could branch out to other articles of clothing? Underwear comes to mind, but that is because I am a reprobate. At the very least maybe your generous KitchenAid/Mixmaster benefactor could use a shirt?

Excellent idea, that last one! Thank you. I will see if the benefactor is open to such

Happy birthday wishes to Father Spo. He is indeed a wise man, requesting something of inestimable value – time for one on one conversations with his family members. There is no substitute.

I hope today finds you feeling a bit better. Life is hard and we all have struggled; so we understand and are empathetic.
I’m happy to hear that your bread turned out well. I have a no-knead recipe that turned out exactly ONE fantastic loaf and all the others since would have received a C minus/D plus grade. I may need to try again.
Happy birthday to your father! I think yummy treats would be the best prize. Particularly, if you can come up with something from his childhood. My mother in law will be 91 this September – and for years now, of all the gifts we give, what she loves best are the fancy coffees, Jelly Belly jelly beans and other tasty tidbits.

Brother #3 says his food desires have diminished to only a few items. Giving him anything more/else gets a thumbs down.
