I’ve worked for a private business for fifteen years. It was run by three people well over four feet until one of them retired and another one stepped down from ownership and the third one sold the place to The Overlords, making the place a part of a corporation.* In my daily work there have been no overt signs of change. It must be just like how the serfs felt whenever there was a revolution or dynasty turnover: the government changes but the mundane activities stay the same. Until now.
I don’t get it many businesslike emails, particularly from The Overlords, but I got one the other day saying I am overdue to attend compliance classes and if they’re not done by 30 September a vague but unsettling consequence will happen.**
I suppose annual online compliance courses are par for the course in corporate work, but they are new to Urs Truly. I had to first figure out first where I had to go. In my old-fashioned thinking I thought I would be in a classroom with a real teacher and classmates. It turns out these lectures are online and done in a slide-show presentation, each with a quiz to take requiring to you pass at 80%. After each course you attest you actually did the damn thing and then you get a certificate suitable for downloading and framing.
I found the videos a bit bewildering as most of them were about how it is not corporate policy to assault coworkers or tell business secrets to the press or snoop around in files that are none of your business. Do people really need to told it’s not nice to hit others and go poking about? I have nothing to compare these to (this being my first time) yet I sense the contents were common protocols that most companies have their minions see and sign off on on a regular basis. There wasn’t anything geared towards physician/patient care per se other than folks are not to give out patient information which I knew anyway.
There was a cartoon lecture on the morbid topic what to do if someone comes to work heavily armed and hell-bent on violence and what to do about it.***
The scientist in me wants to know if there is any supportive data on these online lectures of obvious items (obvious to me anyway) they actually ‘work’ viz. diminish hand-to-hand combat at the office. The cynic in me can’t help but wonder by signing an attestation I have seen the lectures if something goes wrong The Overlords aren’t liable.
The lecture on not accepting gifts, bribes, tickets to shows, etc. was the only one that pricked up my ears as it seemed to say icks-nay on the pharm rep lunches providing meals or (worse) their periodic drop off of imperial tidbits at the office. Several times the lecturers said if there is any suspicious behaviors I should report it to the corporation’s equivalent of The APA secret police.
I am nearly done with the mandatory five lectures; I have two to go. One of them I haven’t passed at 80% as I can never remember if I should call The Judea Peoples Front or The People’s Front of Judea when shenanigans are suspected. The Overlords Inc. stand for integrity and cooperation and respect for all you can ask them yourself.
Where you work are you required to watch or attend lectures on ethics and protocol?
* Their headquarters I recall is in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, so maybe by now The Overlords have been blown away to Oz or Orlando or even South Carolina.
**They should consult with The Board of Directors Here at Spo-reflections on these requests. They are blunt, clear, and succinct in what they want and when they want it done by and what bodily parts will be pierced if not done.
***Barricade yourself in and if this doesn’t work, run. Try to tell as many people as you can in town.

Oh yes in January without fail we have 12 to 15 to do by end March or else. They take roughly 30 mins to do each one. You can redo them if you don’t pass muster. Throughout the year the are others maybe six more. They are trailing a thing you have to log onto every day for 5 mins to answer question. I’m guessing to cater for the peers with a short attention span or those of us face short term memory loss.

Yes that’s a very good description of what I am experiencing. They are rawther dull but most of the time the contents are not ‘exciting’ per se.

It is 3.00 AM. Promise that you will try to get some sleep, and i will too. Just go do the last two presentations, get the money, and get out of there. It doesn’t sound like a nice place.
I remember a meeting like this, when i worked in a grocery store. We had a big meeting that covered all the corporate points.
Hygiene, friendly demeanor etc, things we already knew. TEAMWORK! Also lots of talk about employee theft.
It must be a big issue for them. Because the food was too expensive and expired and out of date food was piling up all over the place and there wasn’t anymore room on the shelves.
So, like the naive minimum wage workers that we were, we decided after 4 weeks it is fair game, with caution.
Turned out, the real thief was the manager. She was a good manager, we forgave her for forcing us to listen to this corporate crap because she seemed sympathetic.
She even stood up for us when we were unhappy about the clothes they wanted us to wear. But all this time, she was secretly stealing money. Embezzling tens of thousands $.
It was so hard to understand. It still is.
She never did go to prison. Too many people loved her. But she betrayed a trust.

Indeed, who is policing the police?
I too wondered about the top lords of The Overlords; who is watching their shenanigans esp. trade secrets?

We have required online training classes we take every single year. They are exactly the same training without any changes. At this point I just click through them to get to the end and I can answer the questions without even sitting through the training as I have them all memorized it seems ridiculous and stupid, but I know they have to do it to cover their asses that they trained us how to run from active shooters, not punch each other, and not drink draino.
Just another thing I will be so happy to put behind me when I retire.
Fun side note: after experiencing my first bout of homophobia at work many years ago, I was questioned by the administration as to what they could do to ensure this did not happen again, or make me feel more comfortable or safe as a gay man in my agency. I pointed out that, despite the fact that our agency has a policy of non-discrimination based on sexual orientation, I had been working with the agency for years that I had never once seen or heard the words gay, lesbian, or bisexual included in any training about antidiscrimination. Within a couple weeks of this meeting, we were all required to take an updated online training course for non-discrimination in the workplace – lo and behold, there is now, a question about the treatment of a black lesbian in a wheelchair. I guess they were trying to cover all bases with one question. Every time I read that question, to this day, it makes me smile and cringe at the same, knowing I was the inspiration for it, but also disappointed that this is as far as they got and the best they could do to be inclusive: one single question referencing a lesbian.

I worked for large universities for much of my career and they were sticklers for compliance courses. Sadly, much of it should go without saying and the ones who need to be reminded won’t follow the rules anyway. AND quite often senior management wouldn’t follow the rules and, regularly instead of getting canned, they’d simply get moved somewhere else — sometimes up.

Another testimony who the minions are managed but the management doesn’t get the same approach. Sad indeed.

“The cynic in me can’t help but wonder by signing an attestation I have seen the lectures if something goes wrong The Overlords aren’t liable.” The lawyer in me says that is EXACTLY one of their purposes. The other purpose is to make it easier for The Overlords to fire you for contravention of those rules, if necessary. It’s the start of the paper trail they can use to defend any wrongful dismissal suit a fired employee may bring.

I figured such. There is a malapert aspect of my mind to do ‘business as usual’ and see if something runs into trouble and I am threatened with firing and I say fine, ta ta. I should say now (lest The Overlords are reading) I am NOT doing anything malicious or unscrupulous other than wearing loud shirts and (occasionally) treaders to work. On the other hand I haven’t seen any lectures on dress code.

About 10 of those a year, I think up to 15 now that I have a couple of minions. And none of them are on how to get minions to deliver work on time. That is what I really need. I agree with Debra, paper trail.

Often I’ve wondered the hypothesis if my place wanted me gone they could find some literal mistake upon which to be rid of me. For example ‘finishing all notes on time” which is seldom done.

Also a sign of a top heavy organization? In my former work life it really seemed that the higher ups were creating more and more hoops for mere workers to jump through and subsequently self report said jumping so that the uppers had multiple pieces of data to manipulate and fuss over to justify their importance when we all knew that they were the dead weight. And yet all the cuts came at the bottom, leaving fewer and fewer folks to do more and more work. I’m so glad that I made it to retirement.

I don’t really know who and what are The Overlords (which is one reason I chose this sobriquet from “Childhood’s End”). I suppose by the time they make themselves more obvious and present in my daily work I will be on the eve of retirement anyway.

If anything, it’s amazing you’ve been so lucky to avoid this modern take on employee training for so long. Now that your organization has been infected, I assure you the practice will spread like the clap.
In fairness, I’ve found a few of these training modules to be somewhat informative over the past decade. All have been far too general in scope to be of meaningful use in performance of my duties; most have been a complete waste of my uncompensated time. I’ve also noted that they are increasingly focused on internal advertising and promotion – a way for marginal-to-unnecessary segments of the organization to remind everyone of their presence and embellish their importance. Unsurprisingly, Human Resources tends to be the leader in this category.

In their defense I learned some things such as how to behave in a terrorist attack and the emails to use when there are questions and troubles to report.

I am retired now, but yes, we had to do many mandatory lectures per year. Not so much to safeguard the employee, but to protect the organization when problems arose. The lecturer always seemed to have a voice that brought on comas. Once I actually saw an employee get up and hit his head repeatedly against the wall. We did our training in large gathered groups. In a way I miss the hilarity of it.

I wonder how many people are between the decision-makers of these requirements and thems who do the presentation? I suspect there are a few, and something is lost in along the way. I also suspect thems who attend and thems doing the presentation neither one wants to be there/do this, resulting in camp or pathos. In a way that’s sad as the actual content viz. how to behave, avoid scams, act in times of crisis are important to know and be prepared for.

At my last two companies, we had annual certifications for that stuff. The last one was a joke that took about fifteen minutes including the quiz. The long time company I was with beforehand had a real stringent course. The quiz was a lot harder, and thank goodness I was able to retake it because you needed 100% and I hardly ever got it right the first time.
If I want to keep my insurance license active, then I get to look forward to 25 hours of course work including an ethics course in roughly 12 months. On my dime, too.

I work for a small accounting firm, we are compelled by the insurance company overlords to take online classes on how you shouldn’t sexually harass others. As accountants we are compelled by state law to have classes in ethics and regulatory issues. All in all, we need 40 hours of continuing education each year.

Hey I learned something!
Doctors are required to take so many course per year that in theory improves their skills (there is little proof this actually happens though). I wasn’t aware accountants have to take courses too. This makes sense now you point it out.
Sexually harassing others still strikes me as so obvious a no-brainer why does it need a course? Spo-fans who are attorneys (the dears!) tell me it is for liability matters more than education.

All I know that if I hadn’t been continually reminded I would have broken out in violence regularly. Even though Debra and Travel Penguin are/were lawyers and know about these things I am sure they are wrong and the Overlords are administering these tests out of the goodness of their hearts; they want every employee to succeed and thrive in the workplace.
Besides, are you not already demonstrating your compliance by attending the compliance training?

In the mission statement is something about success and thriving of all employees yes. I thought the mission was to make as much money as possible for the stockholders.
According to the website I am nearly in 100% compliance with two lectures to go.

Someone goofed somewhere and we all now are subject to a series of annual training that must be done by 12/31. We just had these all completed by July 31. The same ones. Like yours, pretty common sense stuff, but now boxes will be checked again.

Without online training quizzes, you have been living in olden times. No doubt, you accepted chickens and such as payment. The ones our company used, were set up so you can’t get them wrong. If you choose unwisely, they prompt you to rethink your answer. They also are timed so you can’t zip through them. Which is frustrating. Reminds me of filling out paperwork at the army induction center. Questions like “have you ever had chickenpox, mumps etc” were each given a full minute to answer, if you tried to read ahead you were yelled at. Some of my fellow inductees had trouble with these questions. They were clueless. But good on you for heeding the emails. Pay attention to corporate emails this time of year. Usually, open enrollment for benefits starts sometime late October into November. These days choices, benefits and prices can change each year, so ignore at your own peril. But fear not these employee benefit decisions seem like child’s play compared to those of us on Medicare face.

as I fill them out I also wondered if some big brother bean counter was monitoring how quick and how long etc. some of them I did in between appointments, pausing and then restarting as time permitted. I suppose in the end they don’t care so long as I sign off that I did so.

*raises hand* Yes, we also have mandatory “compliance” modules to complete throughout the year; the majority of which are a complete waste of time. And then we have to take the exact same ones the next year. And the year after that, and the year after that, etc.

yes I’m beginning to realize this now that so many dear Spo-fans have written, and similar. Therefore I will expect repeats soon/next year. On the positive note, next time I will know how to do them.

I have just been reading your previous post re Richard 111. My husband spent 7 years at the school next door to the car park ( school is now a Richard museum I believe) The reserved car park space under which Richard was discovered is where my cousin parked for 2 years when she worked for Leicester Police! My department when I was a member of a philosophy faculty in a UK university was required to attend a seminar on equality. A speaker was introduced who, it was said, would talk about sex equality, race equality and disability equality “to cover the full range”–that was the phrase. Since at that time I was making compulsory contributions into a work pension fund which paid a pension to the widows and widowers of hetero employees but not the surviving partners of gay employees (no ss marriage in those days), I thought this was pretty thick. Some of the people who purport to tutor us really have no idea.

I have always, from day one after my military career considered corporate America a bastion of stupidity. Sadly, you have discovered the same. It makes no difference if you got the job done, what is significant is that the paperwork was done, asses covered, litigation postponed.
