… I find it hard to get up in the morning, not because I don’t want to start the day, but because it is toasty warm under the covers and the room is cold. I can lay there for thirty minutes nudging myself to get up and brave the chill.
… I ask Someone does he want the last piece of something when I really want it and should be asking ‘may I have the last piece?” If I said that he would 100% say go ahead. This direct approach sounds too aggressive to my Midwestern roots, so I ask does he want it hoping he hears the indirect speech act to say ‘of course you take it’. If he says ‘sure, thanks” there is a part of me peeved.
… Harper’s favorite treat, ‘bacon bits’, looks and smells good enough to try but I never do. I don’t as I’m afraid I will like them and poor Harper won’t get any more.
… I light a candle for the pure pleasure of knowing there is no parent telling me I shouldn’t play with matches. I can do what I want as I am an adult. So there.
… a teaspoon of mustard makes a good addition to macaroni and cheese; it give flavor and ‘ummph’ but not too much or it will taste mustard like.
… I have so many ‘watch later’ educational lectures/videos/podcast I realize it is not humanely possible to do them and I erase them all. This is rawther nice to do.
… I wonder if I should do skin care products. I see ads for soaps or cleaners or powders or pastes or lotions – things to eliminate dryness or wrinkles or blemishes. According to these my skin would glow and I wouldn’t have as many wrinkles and all would adore me. If anyone knows of something good that isn’t snake oil I would be keen to know.
…I go to the walk-in closet and see my half dozen suits and dress jacket, dust on their shoulders, unworn for years, and consider throwing them out as when will I ever wear them? They don’t fit anymore and would need tailoring to do so. Best to throw them out. Yet I keep them thinking someday I may need them or fit in them again. Fat chance of that. Better to get one fitted and toss the rest out.
…There is rain and it invariably cheers me up to see it. Rain feels like a blessing for me.
… I realize my main source of anxiety is wanting something that I cannot control. When I come to terms with this and focus on what I can not control anxiety dissipates or at least no longer dominates.
… A cup of coffee is preferred to a cup of tea – usually when I need to wake up and fast. Anyone know of a brand of which they are fond? I am open to suggestions.

I’ve been following the same elaborate skin care regime my entire life. Jergens Original Cherry Almond Scent Hand Lotion. Apply where needed to prevent dry skin. About $10 per big bottle that lasts about 3 months. Anything more expensive or making impossible promises is a snake oil ripoff for the gullible.

Is this for face? I got the Spo-bags under the eyes. Oh the embarrassment.

Yes, I actually primarily use it as a face cream. Nothing will prevent/remove bags under the eyes except a face life, I believe.

“face LIFT,” I meant, of course.

Bags under the eyes… I used to have that problem; then I retired from teaching. The most wonderful thing I found was Clarins for men anti-fatigue eye serum. It is truly amazing. You might have to go to a dept. store to get it. As for coffee, my favorite “brand” is Allegro out of Denver. Whole Foods carries it. Also Lavazza–look on the side of the packet and see if there’s a picture of a drip machine, otherwise you’ll get the espresso grind which is not suitable for drip machines. (This, of course, presumed you have the usual American drip machine.) If you must {insert slight disdain emoji here} buy canned coffee, then Folgers.

yes yes yes
thank you for this. I will try not to confuse the Clarins for Allegro

The result would be a wrinkle-free tongue and a swarthy Mediterranean complexion.

PS: With Clarins, make sure to get the serum not the cream. I think the serum works better.

PPS: Not knowing your familiarity with the subject, for Allegro, I suggest trying Rainforest Blend or Whole Foods Blend; for Lavazza either Gran Selezione or Perfetto.

I used to have bags under my eyes. Once I shed the job, I lost the luggage that came with it.

That sounds better than plastic surgery in Palm Springs.

Stop. Using. Soap. It is horrible for your skin. A good washing with water is all most folks need unless you’ve engaged in an activity that made you greasy. This will help alleviate any drying from stripping your skin of its natural oils. Then, apply a simple, dye- and fragrance- free lotion, especially in the winter, as your environment is very dry. Everything else is just snake oil.

I will heed your advice. Don’t want to show up in Palm Springs looking ghastly.

My Finnish grandmother taught my mom to wipe her face with water in the morning and moisturize. That’s it. I think she used Ponds (back in the Depression era). She still looked amazing when she died at 93 and my mom is going strong at 90. I am hooked on Dermalogica, but I’m spoiled.
Intelligentsia coffee. My former barista daughter hooked us on it and now we’re coffee snobs. They sell at Whole Foods, but direct is cheaper and fresher. They’re in Chicago.

Speaking of baristas, the brand Pitango Gelato here uses is Counter Culture. It’ also very good.

I actually use and highly recommend coconut oil for face and body. It really soaks in and moisturizes. I buy the organic jar at any grocery store for a little under
6 dollars.
When you mentioned Harpers treats, it reminded me that I tried my dogs milk bones when I was about. I didn’t get sick but I wouldn’t recommend them.

An interesting, revealing post and a fun, light read to start the day, Spo!
I wish we could argue about eating the last one of anything at our house. The dialog is typically “help me eat the rest of this before it goes in the garbage…” The only exception might be cookies… LOML is in a league with Harper in begging for an endless supply of cookies!
LOML’s bathroom is an arsenal of skin care products that fill 5 drawers, 2 medicine cabinets and an oversized countertop that I’ve teasingly christened “The Beauty Bar”. At best these products seem to impart a temporary moisturized glow that slightly softens evidence of aging skin. In LOML’s case, this requires dedicated “facial cleansing” and application of the “wrinkle putty” twice daily. He might argue, but I don’t think brand matters so much, evidenced by the dozen+ varieties he alternates with no apparent method to the madness.* Note that all of these little tubules are breathtakingly expensive! As with the beauty queen’s makeup, skip an application and the difference in appearance is noticeable. For these reasons, my daily beauty regimen is limited to French milled soap in the shower each morning…
For coffee, I have a canister of Illy Whole Bean Medium Roast in the freezer that I drag out along with the French press every couple months if I’m feeling particularly snooty. It strikes me as overrated and outrageously pricey at $2 an ounce. Received as a gift, its unlikely to be replaced when gone. A new discovery we’ve been alternating with our default Costco house blend is Don Francisco Colombian Supreme Medium Roast. It’s quite good in the $.67/oz price range. We both also really like Seattle’s Best (either Breakfast or House Blend) similarly priced and easiest to find in our area.
* There’s also a mysterious tube of Preparation H in the bottom drawer that he refuses to explain but makes no sense given that I’m certain he doesn’t have hemorrhoids…

Every once in a while I rummage through the bathroom ‘junk drawer’ and find all sorts of tubes salves and ointments with no recollection of when and why they were bought. Some of them look hardly used. As many are old, I toss’em with some sense it is good to do so based on expiration date.

For coffee with maximum jolt, I’d recommend a light roast since less of the oils and volatile compounds are “burnt off” thereby resulting in a cup with more of everything.
I’d suggest finding a good local roaster. Much like produce from the southern hemisphere, I believe that beans that have already travelled half way around the world only to be processed and packaged and then shipped again might be a bit tired (just as you or I would be after such a journey). Save them the last part of the trip.

When I have a cup of coffee I get my beans from Spring-heeled Jack coffee company, which (they say) is brewed in the deep dark diabolical heart of Ohio (says so on the label).
Light roast = more oils and compounds? sounds right.

Sounds like you need a programmable thermostat. Not the “Nest” kind that can be hacked, but the Honeywells that cost $25-$40. We turn the heat down to 61 at night and by the time we get out of bed, the temperature is up at a toasty 64. Very easy to install, too.

I vote you try the bacon bits. If worst comes to worst you will find them as addictive as goldfish crackers and you will have to buy Harper her own box which Someone will have to lock up out of your reach. More likely it will get the craving out of your system. Like gay sex or heroin, doggy treats are one of those things that people crave for years, but which do not live up to the hype when finally experienced.
February 3, 2023 at 2:57 PM
Urspo
what does live up to the hype?
I will let you know someone left an open hardly-touch bag of Goldfish crackers in the office kitchen and I haven’t laid a finger on it – and they are hot sauce flavored! my favorite.

Old Lurker
What moral fortitude! Your Puritan ancestors would be proud. I would have inhaled those poor goldfish crackers the minute I laid eyes on them.
As for what is worth the hype, I can think of two things: a long restful sleep, and living without chronic pain.

I second the vote to try the bacon bits. They sound beyond delicious! Buy double quantities then no squabbling ensues and you & Harper can have it as your “thing” that you share together. Bacon-bitz-buddies!
Ask any dermatologist for the secret elixir and they nearly as a body say sorbolene creme. So dreary and comes with none of the allure or packaging we so fond of. Nonetheless, it seems to work. Oh, and no soap on your dial.

I need to have a look-see on the back of the Bacon-bits package to see what are the ingredients. I suspect nothing but chemicals. If so, why am I giving them to my dog?

In the dry winter season my skin gets dry pretty quick so I try to avoid too long often washing.
Sometimes a good wash is more symbolic for me than needs of hygiene.

A delightful list. Sweet Bear buys the coffee, I don’t care as long as it is black, and strong, and cooled off a bit, . . . (you can add your fill in the blank.) The best skin care tip, is good genetics, I haven’t taken care of myself.

There are no miracle cure-all products out there. Trust me, I’ve looked. But moisturizing after washing (your face, your body, your hands, etc.) is critical. For the winter (your winter is probably a lot milder), I prefer heavier creams and in the summer, I can get away with lighter lotions. And if you do happen to stumble across a cure for the bags under the eyes – please share!
As for coffee, I’m perfectly happy with Maxwell House Columbian Medium Roast.

I don’t have a taste for coffee (unlike tea) it sort of tastes like coffee. Since I add cream and such it seems to me not to bother with the fancy stuff. I should do a double blind taste test and see if I can tell differences among the brews.

I’m the same! While not a morning person, I can’t get moving for the same reason. Of course, the warming blanket and waking between two guys some days doesn’t help either.

It is especially challenging to arise when others are there providing extra heat. And goodness forbid if there is a dog too getting in the way.

Why not just try a taste of those bacon bits? Just a tiny little fragment? Go ahead, you are already thinking about it. They can’t be all bad if she loves them so.
In my culture, it is okay for humans to offer food to dogs, but it is not ok for dogs too offer food to humans, unless of course they are a rescue dog.
I avoid the whole controversy by going to the local bodega and buy a bag pork rinds aka chicharrones. They are too salty for dogs, but they are similar.

Because of reasons, that would be taboo. There are standards and expectations. I was not raised to eat Purina cat food.
We still have food. I will eat rice and beans before i eat canned cat food, but when i smell it, excites my taste buds. This is why we have menudo. And other foods. Sometimes we try to introduce Chavela Vargas. Anyway, despite what you think, we are not out here eating cat food.

Dove soap, the original white bar does not dry. It does not even have to be rinsed off. I asked the dermatologist about this and he said it was best soap and no need to rinse.
Anything with retinol tightens skin and shrinks pores, preventing and old look. I have used Oil of Olay Age Defying something. Skin looks finer. I don’t use it to look younger, just to reduce pore size. Otherwise, I would have craters for pores.
Tommy drinks coffee, black; I don’t drink anything hot. I bought him a coffee from Starbuck in Barnes and Noble, house brew, they said. He loved it.

We exist off of cakes of soap harvested from hotel stays; I wrap them up to bring home. I haven’t bought a bar in years. When I do, it’s going to be Dove.

For years I kept twenty plus suits that I used to wear during my banking career. Then one year I gave them all to my late brother who was a youth pastor to give to his flock of needy slim young men. I kept one Navy blue suit for my Final Exit. I almost wore it to my brother’s funeral and was going to leave it in South Carolina but I couldn’t leave Bill because of my caregiving responsibilities. And there that somber suit hangs in my closet.

I am probably responding to the wrong post, but i came here to defend the young guys who go to the gym and take up all the space. Where else would they go? Do you want them to go to a bar? I say give them the space. Let them enjoy their youth and their drama. They will find out soon enough. I like young guys. I used to be one, and i fell in love with one. Not a care in the world, except for a few.
I think y’all are forgetting how to be gay. I never wanted to change the world, i just wanted to live with my friend.
It has been a complete disaster. We were pretty tough, but not tough enough. Damn, we even learned english.
I am still here, but my boyfriend died 18 years ago near Littlefield Arizona in an accident.
So don’t you dare complain about those silly shallow boys at the gym. It is too upsetting.

If you are going to die of this cold, we feel relief that us survivors will not have to bury you in a cream colored suit. But we will do it if you ask. For gratitude and respect. Mostly, we just burn our dead. That is a whole thing.
We probably will say O i wish i he had made more shirts!
