Stinko. I have a cold. On Tuesday Someone went to the dental school for a checkup, where he sat in a chair with his mouth clamped open for some time in an open area surrounded by staff. He came home with a new crown and a bug. His voice has gone from husky to hoarse and his coughing is profound. I immediately took The Christian Scientist approach to unsee the virus as error and told it to go away.* Unfortunately the bug refused to unsee Someone and hopped over to Urs Truly. We took covid tests and they happily came up negative. It’s just your run-of-the-mill rhinoviruses.
My symptoms aren’t so bad. It is a conglomerate of a slightly sore throat with a non-productive cough (so far) and a general malaise with restlessness I want to do things anyway. I’ve postponed the usual Saturday activities of gym and errands to stay home and feel bummed. I’ve learned from experience nothing helps speed these things up and one has to wait. Strong hot teas are prescribed on the grounds they can do little harm.
When sick neither wants to sound like something out of “Diary of a mad housewife”. We tend to withdraw (he to the tub and me to the bed) and not bother the other, and wait. Someone believes in feeding a cold while I find eating the last thing I want to do. If I am sickly but functioning I will work from home on the laptop. Someone’s job is in public service; he’s one of those types who goes to work unless he is near death.
This is the first cold of the season for me, which is saying something. I’ve managed to maneuver through the winter going out in public and not catch anything – until now. I like to think my masking contributed to my success. I suppose it was just a matter of time Someone would come home with something, as is the case now.
Taking the ‘good’ approach, what’s ‘good’ about this damn thing is I don’t have to go out/go the gym or do anything really. I can get caught up in blogs and on-line tasks. I have lots of lovely books to read done under covers with Harper RN to keep me company. I may even work on a new Spo-shirt, something I haven’t done in ages.
While it is no fun being sick it could be a lot worse, and if this is my serving size I’m a fortunate fellow.
Anyone know a good recipe for Hot Toddy?
*I even read it “The scientific statement of being’.

Thee beest a medical person, no? What up with your head, physician? [Strong black tea, large mug; double shot of Old Snakebite, squeeze of lemon, REAL lemon, drizzle of honey, slurp while nearly too hot. Repeat. Often.]

I hope you’re feeling better soon. Strong tea, shot of whiskey, splash of lemon and honey as hot as you can handle it.

never mind the honey but yes to the whiskey

I hope you feel better soon. Colds suck, but at least be thankful that’s all it is. I don’t have any recipes for it, but hot tea definitely sounds good right now for it.

Hot tea is the panacea of all ills – and if that doesn’t work, whiskey.

I am sorry to hear this. Please feel better soon. Last time i had a cold, i killed it with tea and a half pint of jim beam. If you are well enough to eat, try some cup noodles ramen. I hope you will feel better soon.

Another recommendation for whiskey! By my calculation, this brings it up to a half gallon.

Snarky Spo, it is not like we drink whiskey everyday. We save it for emergencys. In this case, it might be an emergency. So drink some soup and eat a piece of cheese. Go to bed.

Hot lemon and honey! You can add a shot of whiskey, if you want. But hot lemon and honey is the bomb! Get well soon, Spo. Colds are annoying!

Hot lemon and honey is on the agenda – with splash of whiskey.

When I’m sick which seems to be very rare, I sleep, want left alone and drink hot tea with honey and some Hendricks gin.

Drat I am out of the gin, so Chivas Regal will have to do.

Blanton’s single barrel bourbon, juice of half a lemon, and generous spoon of honey, warmed in the microwave or with a dash of boiling water. If you have Blanton’s let me know, hard to find. The Duty Free shop in Chicago had it, but couldn’t sell it to me because I didn’t have an international boarding pass.

I used to love Blantons until it became the hot commodity and now it’s impossible to find let alone afford. Old Crow must do.

Hot toddy for a cold recipe: boil some water, pour Kentucky bourbon generously into a mug, pour boiling water down the kitchen sink drain : add some honey to mug. You won’t care if you have a cold or not. I’m from Kentucky so don’t question this.

Stinko. I feel upset that people are transmitting infections at the dentist, and that Someone may have to work when he is sick. Apparently we have learned nothing from this pandemic.
In unrelated news, I just listened to a comedy podcast where one of the sets was by a COVID minimizer. I know that the pandemic is over and anybody who is still worried should be prescribed Xanax and CBT, but the comedy set still made me angry. One of the other bloggers I read just went through/is going through a big health scare instigated by a tiring persistent cough, and it was/is really frightening. I hope you and Someone heal up quickly and well.

Xanax and CBT? Oh my! Could you do a PDR check on this combination, Dr. Spo? When you’re feeling better, of course – which I hope is soon.

Happy that it is not COVID.
I believe the Ms Glenda has given you the correct directions in her comment above. I think her recipe would be strong enough to send me straight to bed and to sleep for an extended period, which is probably exactly what I would need to do.
Heal and be well.

Oh, no! Hope you’re both feeling better soon. Having just gotten over Covid (it finally got me), I know how feeling ill and not wanting to do much feels, especially when one is usually active and can’t sit down and not do anything.
As for what worked for smoothing my cough, I found pineapple juice helped, especially at nighttime.
Get well soon.

Stinko is right. How about rock and rye and hot water to soothe your aches? Rock and rye is every bit as peculiar as its name portends—a blend of citrus and rye whiskey sweetened with crystallized sugar.
This sounds exactly what was going around The Estate on Miller Ridge…except it was Influenza B (note the capitalized Influenza…She deserves all the respect in the world).
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Rock and rye! There’s a word from my past. As a boy we drank Faygo. They had a rock and rye soda pop. I don’t remember what it tasted like. Would be fun to find some.
